The Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that "To be a bona
fide religious belief entitled to protection under either the First Amendment
or Title VII, a belief must be sincerely held, and within the believer's
own scheme of things religious." (USCA Const. Amend 1: Civil Rights Act
1964 701 et seq., 717 as amended 42 USCA 2000-16). So why is it that we
pagans, heathens, witches, and wiccans, often find road-blocks down many
avenues? For centuries, out ancient spiritual ancestors have been slandered,
murdered, and hated, simply because they were not 'popular' with either
the majority or those in power or both.
Today, many that wear a pentacle to work feel the hateful and fearful
glares of their co-workers and superiors. Many happy and decent children
& teenagers are teased, bullied, and worse, at the hands and tongues
of their peers and teachers, because either they and/or their parents are
known pagans. These animosities often evolve to become not unlike the violence
our ancestors faced centuries ago. There are no laws saying that you have
to agree with someone's opinions or beliefs, nor do you even have to like
the person. But there are laws that say you do
have to tolerate people and their opinions.
When the line is crossed, Coven International will be there. To paraphrase
the well-known saying, "the best offense is a good defense", we at Coven
International say, "even the best sword cannot penetrate a better shield".
This is why we at Coven have named our legal department "The Shield". The
Shield's main purpose is to protect the legal rights of Coven International's
congregation and members.
The Shield works with other pagan organizations on legal research and
with attourneys. In addition, Coven International provides protection to
its members and congregation through The Shield's Pagan Defense Fund
(PDF). The PDF exists to provide financial assistance to our congregation
& members in times of need. Portions of all proceeds from fund-raisers
and membership dues go to the PDF. If you would like to make a donation
to the PDF, please visit our Donations page.
If you would like more information about The Shield or the Pagan Defense
Fund, please contact The Shield on our Contact page.
