Debate Tournament Listing
Debate Tournament has always served as a WiC trademark over at the Oceanside High School. Without a single debate club in the school, the World Interest Club has made a point to establish Debate Tournament as an Oceanside High School tradition - a non-exclusive NCAA-style tournament seeking to refine both the knowledge and persuasive techniques of Oceanside students. Each competing player is given his/her topic ahead of time, so as to research prior to the debate. The twist, however, is that only the flip of a coin determines whether the student will be speaking for or against the given statement. The debate then proceeds as:
Pro - Opening statement (2 Min)
Con - Questioning period (3 Min)
Con - Opening statement (2 Min)
Pro - Questioning period (3 Min)
Pro – Rebuttle and Closing Statements (2 Min)
Con – Rebuttle and Closing Statements (2 Min)
Total Time: 14 Minutes
At the end of each debate, the officers will leave the room and decide the winner. The winner is determined based on accuracy of information, persuasiveness of argument, technique, and creativity. Although there is no secret formula for determining a winner, all of these factors play to determining the victor of the debate.
