The World Interest Club returned for the fourth time to Brown University Simulation of the United Nations this past November. Success was to be expected given the previous success of the club at the conference, however
Upon arriving from Providence and BUSUN 2009 with a great degree of success, the attention of old and young members of WiC alike turned to the upcoming trip to Harvard Model United Nations in January. Often regarded as the pinnacle of Model UN, the most brutal coliseum of discussion and debate in the Model UN world, the World Interest Club faced a daunting task. Feeling determined to win the Best Large Delegation Award and prepared to demonstrate their debating skills in committee, the Oceanside delegation went into committee the night of January 28th, with anxiety and stress close on their tail. The tension in the air the morning of February 1st at the HMUN awards ceremony was quite apparent. By the conclusion of awards, Oceanside had done rather well in GAs, and despite falling somewhat short in specialized committees and ECOSOCs, emerged from Harvard Model United Nations determined to fuel future ambitions at other conferences with the memories of disappointment and the desire to win.
After departing to Baltimore to compete in John Hopkins University Model United Nations (JHUMUNC), Oceanside’s World Interest Club emerged victorious. Despite it being Oceanside’s’ first time attending the conference, the World Interest Club brought home the Best Large Delegation Award, a testament to their hard work and dedication. With 27 awards, 9 more than 2nd place rival Horace Mann, Oceanside made a resounding statement. Besides taking home 6 Best Delegate awards in some of the most difficult committees like Historic Security Council (Scott Elias), the International Criminal Court (Vlad Ciocoi), and the Soviet Union Triumvirate Committee (David Sheynberg), in addition to Best Delegate in the World Health Organization (Ariel Yardeni), SOCHUM ( Rachel Olin), and Legal (Evan Lee), the World Interest Club won 4 Outstandings, 10 Honorable Mentions, 5 Verbal awards, and 2 Best Novice awards. Through an ethic of desire, discipline, dedication, and persistence, the World Interest Club proved that their slogan, 'We're not good; We're Oceanside' continues to live on.
