Jackson has several school systems.
Jackson Independent School District houses K-12 under one roof. This
school has a home-like environment, containing only about 600 students
(the size has nearly doubled in recent years).
The Breathitt County School
District has L.B.J Elementary, Sebastian Middle School, Breathitt High
School, Highland-Turner Elementary, Rousseau Elementary, and Marie Roberts
Elementary.
The officials of these two school
districts have been at odds for over a year now. This is due to the
fact that several students from the Breathitt County School District
have transferred to Jackson Independent. This has been a nasty fight
over district boundaries and funding. However, students from all
districts remain friend.
Adding to the list of schools
in Jackson are Riverside Christian School, Mt. Carmel Christian School,
and Oakdale Christian Academy. These school are all K-12 and house
small numbers of students.
Jackson was one of the first
mountain towns to offer a college education. Lees Junior College
has grown into Lees College Campus of Hazard Community Technical
College, which offers several four-year degree programs.
Last but not least, Jackson also has
Kentucky Mountain Bible College.
