Wolf spiders are another kind of hunting spider. Hunting spiders do not build a web.  Instead they seek out their prey.

There are many species of wolf spiders but all have the same general characteristics.  Wolf spiders have six eyes, two on the top row and four on the bottom row.  For a spider they have enormous jaws that help in capturing prey.  They have better than average vision and they are colored a dull brownish gray.  They can be found under foliage, living near water, or in a funnel web.

All wolf spiders are excellent hunters.  Their eyesight, mixed with the ability to run swiftly, make a great combination.  In their small world, the wolf spider is by far the dominant predator.

Some species of wolf spiders are about the size of a quarter in diameter while others can range to several inches.

They typically capture prey that is larger than themselves.  They attack quickly, injecting their venom until their prey stops its movement.  They then hoist their prey into a dark shelter and feeds.24

Wolf spiders have been known to survive forest fires.  They dig into the ground until the flames have passed.  They are one of the first to come out.  If they survive such fates, most wolf spiders can live to be several years old.

Female wolf spiders are very maternal.  They carry their eggs sac around with them until the spiderlings are born.  Then, for about a week, the females carry them around on her back.
