Chicago was the favored film at this year's Academy Awards, and it sure came through. With 13 nominations, the film came out winning six awards. Those included art direction, costume design, film editing, sound, best actress in a supporting roll (for Catherine Zeta-Jones) and of course, the prestigious best picture. Chicago is the first movie musical since 'Oliver!' to win the best picture.

"Based on the preliminary numbers, ABC estimated that 37 million people watched "Chicago" win best picture." -CNN online

Many were surprised that Renee Zellweger did not win for best actress though. The award went to Zellweger's toughest competitor, Nicole Kidman, who received it for her role in The Hours. The Hours was another highly praised film. However, Kidman's award was the only one that the movie came away with that night. Many were shocked at how well The Pianist did. Adrien Brody won for best actor in a leading role, while Polanski won for best director. That was another surprise, as recent life-time achievement winner Scorcese was nearly a lock in for his directorial work on Gangs of New York.

Chicago:Plot Summary of the Movie

Roxie Hart is a married chorus girl with hopes of being a headliner in Vaudeville. Velma Kelly is a former headliner. What do these two have in common? They both are murderesses. Roxie killed her lover when he walked out on her, and Velma killed her husband and sister, who were having an affair. Chicago's newspapers love the nitty-gritty and Velma is at the top of the headlines. But then Roxie comes along and Velma is old news. They find themselves competing for not only the press' attention, but also the focus of their shared lawyer, the suave Billy Flynn. Add to the mix a sob sister, Roxie's hapless husband Amos, and a warm prison matron who watches out for her girls (if there's something in it for her), and you have Chicago.
