WHO
ARE WE?
NMSR is a mounted horse unit, of between
10 and 20 people, trained in first aid, CPR, land navigation, personal and
equine survival and other outdoor skills. Augmented by radio equipment, we use
well-trained horses, capable of searching large tracts of forest land,
snowmobile trails, fields and other terrain to locate downed aircraft, hunters
or hikers lost in the woods, or respond to other emergency situations.
We are designed to complement, not replace, services provided by law
enforcement, volunteers on foot or all-terrain vehicles, Civil Air Patrol and
Headwaters Search and Rescue dog patrols.
The unit works under the direction of
the Lincoln and
Oneida County Sheriff's Departments and
can be dispatched to other counties and police
departments. Lincoln County Sheriff, Tom Koth will provide references upon
request. We hope to be of
assistance. |
SERVICE
AREA
Northwoods
Mounted Search and Rescue serving but not limited to:
Oneida, Lincoln, Marathon, Vilas, Price, Forest and Langlade Counties.
TRAINING
Throughout the year, volunteer members of the NMSR attend continuing education programs, and share information with other members. Wilderness survival, HOMEographical map reading, grid search techniques, compass reading, horse training, crowd control measures, and radio communications are taught and reviewed as needed.
Members must maintain certification in basic "Citizen" First Aid and CPR.
We
provide a certified instructor for the first aid and CPR
training. Perspective members are not required to have any
other special
training, just a willingness to learn. They
should however, have access to a horse that has completed the NMSR
Desensitization training (or similar) and transportation for that horse.
EVENTS
The
unit promotes itself by participating in parades and other community events,
such as providing perimeter security for the Hodag Country Festival.
The Northwoods Mounted Search and Rescue is a non-profit organization and
relies on donations for support.
