Starting off, Dragon Ball Z was released in Japan and was created by Akira Toriyama, not FUNimation. Funimation recreated the series, which you see right now in the United States on Cartoon Network, or any other channel... Here's the real story-- Dragon Ball (It wasn't called Dragon Ball Z then) was released in Japan as a weekly comic book strip called Shonen Jump. It was based on the monkey legends that the Japanese history holds. In a matter of time, the Dragon Ball series become the most popular anime comics in Japan. A while later after the Dragon Ball series finished, Akira Toriyama (The Author) created a new series called Dragon Ball Z because so many people envied his work and wanted to see more... All of this happened in 1984--the story of a little boy and his adventures became really popular and it was the top selling manga (comic) in Japan. In 1986, the first episode of Dragon Ball was released on TV. After a while, Akira Toriyama had to start a new series called Dragon Ball Z. After 291 episodes, Akira Toriyama decided to leave the great series of Dragon Ball. The series did not stop, and soon after, the fans wanted more Dragon Ball!! The companies that made the series before, decided to invent their own series called Dragon Ball GT (A.K.A Dragon Ball Grand Tour). Akira Toriyama sadly had no part in these new series (they weren't that good either). Now, after all of the series, there are rumors that there will be a new series called Dragon Ball AF (A.K.A Dragon Ball After Future). The new series are now known to be fake, but there are some people that you can find that went to a Dragon Ball Z convention in Las Vegas and saw the new series in production.
