King Williams' War
(1689-97)

King Williams' War was the first war in the series of the three wars leading up to the French and Indian War, also called the War of Grand Alliance. The war was between France and a coalition of English powers, known as the League of Ausburg, also called the Grand Alliance (Parkman 1). This would have no real affects on the Colonies, since most of the fighting happened in Europe. It was marked principally by frontier attacks on the British Colonies and by the British taking Port Royal, but it was re-captured by the French about a year later (Parkman 1). The Treaty of Ryswick in 1697 was short lived, and the colonists were plunged into war again (Parkman 1).
