About Cold January Farewell
On January 26, 2001, we lost two special friends, Andy T.
Maas and Cody J. Frisch.
They were traveling southbound to Marshfield, Wisconsin when they hit a
patch of ice. The vehicle lost
traction and slid into oncoming traffic when another car struck them from
the side. The car was split in half
leaving the two passengers in the front with minor injuries. The two in the back, (Cody and Andy)
however, didn’t make it. This day
will never be erased from our minds and not a day goes by that we don’t
think of them.
Cold January
Farewell, originally known as Glimpse of Hope, was formed by Cody and
Adam, in Adam’s garage during the summer of 2000. They continued writing songs, and soon
after, Cory Kromray joined the band as the bass player. Also, at the beginning of the school
year, a foreign exchange student, named Sebastian Ostreich, tried out at
singing, and had an incredible voice.
As the songs got more technical and harder, his voice matured into
an amazing scream, which left the band with many options of song style. At this time, Cody was also in a band
called First Class Failure with Erick (drums) and Zack (bass/vocals). As time went on, the two bands merged and
Erick and Zack joined Glimpse of Hope as well. Zack took over on bass and backup vocals
and Erick played drums. For a few
months everything went great and the band was writing amazing songs and was
scheduled to record sometime in mid-February. However, two weeks before the recording
date, the accident occurred and many things changed…Cold January Farewell
Upon Cody’s death,
Cold
January Farewell was left as a four-piece.
But in time, Sebastian returned to Germany and the band was
then left to a three-piece.
Determined to keep Cody’s life and spirit alive through music, the
remaining members (Zack, Erick, Adam) began playing with Ross Bruggink on
guitar, who was in a punk band called Ten Fists
Strong. Ross quickly became the
newest member. Zack, Erick, and Ross
equally assumed the responsibilities of vocals, and CJF played for much of
their existence as a four-piece.
Cold January Farewell returned to the studio in the fall of 2002 to
record the follow up to “For Now Until Forever”. Upon completion, CJF began a search for a
new lead singer. After practicing
with Adam Reek, also formerly of Ten Fists Strong and currently in The
Recoil Effect, the band was sure he was a perfect fit.
Cold January
Farewell, now consisting of Adam Ebbert, Erick Boustead, Zack
Boustead, Ross Bruggink, and Adam Reek, continue to create heartfelt,
passionate melodies, influenced by hardcore, punk, and emotive rock,
harmonizing the joyous musical spirit of Cody James Frisch.
