The Maxim X was first introduced in 1985, but was only made for two years. It only displaced 700 cc instead of 750 cc because of the ITC tariff in place in the US. I don't know a lot about the tariff other than it was an attempt to help out Harley Davidson Inc. by preventing the Japanese from importing bikes which competed with the Harley's, i.e., only those over 700 cc. So what Yamaha did was down the displacement of the Maxim and Maxim X to 700 cc for the US market. Of course here in Canada, and everywhere else in the world, we got the Maxim and Maxim X 750 in 1985-86.
