EXCERPT...
From the final chapter, "Is He Your First Love?"
Have you learned what it means to have a polished character? Consider a jewel, when it is polished, there is some work and effort put into it. A jewel shines more brightly when some elbow grease is put into it. If you leave the jewel sitting on a shelf, it will only collect dust. Don't allow who you are to collect dust. A polished character is something you work at. It will not happen in an instant. In fact, when you find one area of your life shining, you will quickly discover that there is still more that needs to be polished. The work never seems to end but take heart! You are not in this alone. I like the example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who were thrown into the fiery furnace. Prior to this punishment, they told King Nebuchadnezzar, "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and He will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if He does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up" (Daniel 3:17-18 NIV). What trust in God they had! Do you have that much trust? Know that even if you should be dipped into the fire and go through the painful process of what it takes to be refined, that the hand of God is in that fire with you. And when He lifts you out, you will see more of His reflection in you. Oh, how it's worth it!
