The Village of Plain

    The Village of Plain is nestled quietly in the valleys and bluffs of beautiful Sauk County. Plain is just a short drive to Madison, Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo, Sauk-Prairie and Spring Green, which lies on the banks of the Wisconsin River and features The American Players Theater, specialty shops and is just miles north of The House on the Rock. Plain was founded as the Town of Cramer’s Corners and later became the Village of Plain in 1912. Since then, Plain has been known for its small, hometown atmosphere. Nestled among the acres of majestic trees and nature kissed valleys, Plain has many things to offer.

    Towering over the Village, on the crest of a hill, is St. Luke’s Catholic Church. St. Luke’s was built of Lannon stone in Romanesque style of Architecture in 1939. The church features beautiful Italian marble and is surrounded with cathedral stained-glass windows. St. Luke’s seats 850 people and offers an area for luncheons.

    Just west of St. Luke’s church, is St. Anne’s Shrine and Grotto. On a remote spot, atop a steep hill, is built a shrine in honour of St. Anne. The Stations of the Cross lead you from the church grounds, through the cemetery, then along a winding path to the steep incline, which ends at the shrine. Entering the stone and mud chapel, your eyes alight on the colourful stone altar on which a statute of St. Anne is enthroned. A definite ‘must see’ for visitors and residence alike.

    Plain also features a number of establishments serving food. Be sure to check out the Palace Restaurant and Bowl. Their food is second to none. When finished dining, treat yourself to a cocktail and a game of bowling. The Palace also has a dinner hall for company parties, wedding receptions and reunions. The American Legion Post 398, Sam’s Place, I-Diehl Tap and Ring’s also offers a nice menu and cold drinks.

    Just around the corner you will find Straka Meats. Straka’s meets all your deer processing needs and carries a variety of fresh meats.

    Phil’s River Valley Supermarket is a hometown market. Locally owned, service and variety are top priority.

They offer hair care products and cosmetics.

    Approximately 1 mile northeast of Plain you will find Cedar Grove Cheese/factory tours and sales. Founded in 1900, Cedar Grove is a family owned factory, practicing and teaching the art of cheese making. Cedar Grove boasts the making of the best traditional and specialty cheeses you’ve ever tasted, prepared without artificial growth hormones or animal enzymes. Cedar Grove ships around the globe and they package for fund-raisers. The party trays are an art in itself. Tours of the factory are a must and you can not leave without sampling the many varieties of fresh curds.

    The Cheese Maker #1, Inc., is found in the heart of Plain. With over 75 varieties of cheeses to choose from and a variety of fine wines and liquor, no need to worry about your next soirée. Cheese trays and gifts are also available.

    While at the Cheese Maker, step next door into Country Crossroads Floral. Country Crossroads is a full service floral shop, including wire service; AFS and Teleflora. Country Crossroads features unique gifts, balloons, picture frames, greeting cards, and is open 6 days a week. Their friendly knowledgeable staff caters to bridal parties and carries a number of beautiful arrangements for the ‘last minute’ shopper.

    Need gasoline? No need to travel far. Plain offers 2 service stations for your convenience. Both the Cenex and Plain Kwik Stop convenient stores offer gasoline, snacks and some of the essentials you may need on short notice. Plain Kwik Stop has a car wash, while Cenex offers vehicle service, maintenance and repair.

    The Plain Public Library includes many books and magazines. They have artwork, videos and music to lend, and have a computer for public use; with Internet access. Plain Public Library is part of the Wisconsin South Central Library system and can get what you are looking for, should they not have it. The library offers a story hour for children, and often brings in educators/entertainers from outside the area. Everything you would expect from a ‘big city’ library, but much more friendly.

    Plain has 2 elementary schools. The Plain Public School and St. Luke’s Catholic School, both located within a block of each other and both offering generous playgrounds for the students to enjoy, and a friendly, knowledgeable staff. Both schools are in the River Valley School District, and bussing is available for the students.

    Westbrook Hills Golf Course is a beautiful 9-hole golf course. Enjoy the fresh air and get some exercise while golfing at the foot of the beautiful homes that sit on the bluff lining the course. Beverages are available to quench your thirst on those hot summer days.

    Plain is quite proud of their Municipal Park and Swimming Pool. The park features a newly constructed covered pavilion. The public restrooms are clean and have running water. The park also features a very nice playground for the children, tennis courts for the more active person, a basketball court and a baseball diamond. Just footsteps away, you will find the Municipal Swimming Pool. The pool includes a diving board, and a ‘baby pool’ for the more reserved swimmer.

    Staying in Plain is a pleasure on its own. Plain offers 2 incredibly charming Bed & Breakfasts. For a taste of nostalgia, the Bettinger House Bed & Breakfast is on the north end of Plain and is within walking distance to the downtown businesses and shops, the park and the pool. The beautiful Kraemer House Bed & Breakfast is located on the corner of Spruce Street and St. Luke’s Avenue and is also within walking distance of many of Plain’s attractions.

    The Plain Police Department presently consists of 3 part-time officers, 1 full-time officer and room for 1 full-time officer/chief. The police department is located in the municipal building at 1015 Cedar Street. Plain also has a very caring EMS staff. Also quick to respond, is the Plain Volunteer Fire Department. All housed at the above location.    Fun for the whole family!!! The Parish picnic, the annual 3-Day Celebration and the many ball tournaments are just a few of the summer time activities Plain has to offer. In the winter, Plain has many snowmobile trails to take you exploring into beautiful Sauk County. Autumn and Spring in Sauk County is beyond imagination. A rainbow of vibrant colours peppers the area with newness and life.
