CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2

SEPTEMBER 13, 2001

Nick sat staring at the phone, hoping for his girlfriend would Tiffany to call him. He hadn't seen her in 2 days and he was starting to think the worst. Already a good friend and co-worker had died in the plane crash, he knew he couldn't bear losing Tiffany too. He looked around his hotel room, then grabbed his coat, headed towards the destruction.

Mrs. Hoff walked slowly into the morgue, closing her eyes, letting the tears fall. A police officer had called her after seeing her daughter's face on a missing person bulliten board outside his station. Mrs. Hoff had to go identify her daughter's body. She held onto the door handle, looking at her knuckles turn white. This was the moment she had dreaded her entire life, she knew in her heart her little Emily was inside there. She opened the door and walked in. A doctor ran to her and smiled, he extended his hand and she shook it.

"I'm sorry for the wait...I've been a little busy" He exclaimed. Mrs. Hoff didn't show any expressions at all. He took the hint and led her to a wall, with holders for bodies on it. Mrs. Hoff squeezed her eyes shut as he opened one of the little doors and opened the body bag. When she opened her eyes, she almost threw-up. She couldn't even tell if it was her little girl or not.

"Is this Emily Hoff?" He asked. Mrs. Hoff shrugged.

"I can't...." She started, then stopped herself. She pushed the zipper down, seeing a necklace around the body's neck. "Yea...That's her"

"Thank you" The doctor replied. Before she could react, he slid the door shut and escorted her out. Mrs. Hoff walked outside, seeing the hundreds of people standing there, giving her looks of sympathy. She walked over to the missing persons board and reached to rip a peice of paper down. Before she grabbed it, she stopped. As much as the person looked like Emily, thier hair was pure blonde, Emily's had been brownish-blonde.

"Tiffany Lex" She read aloud. She smiled, if she hadn't noticed the hair, she would've sworn it was Emily. She moved her hand away and pulled Emily's picture off the wall.

Nick watched a older woman in her 40's pull a photo off a missing persons wall and sighed. He walked up the the picture of Tiffany and sighed. No one had called the number on the bottom, informing him on any news about her. She had said she was going site seeing in Manhattan and that was the last time he saw her. His cell phone rang and he quickly picked it up.

"Yea?" He asked,

"Hey sweetie how are you holding up?" Jane Carter asked.

"How do you think?" Nick muttered.

"Well then you'll be glad to hear what just happened...A woman called in about 40 minutes ago...She said she was a big fan of the group and when Tiffany came in here last night-she instantly recognized her" Jane explained.

"Where's 'here' mom?" Nick questioned, already running towards a cab.

"St. Mary's Hospital...About 20 minutes away from Manhattan" Jane replied. Nick instructed the cabbie on where to go and sped away.

"Tiff?" Nick asked. The girl opened her eyes, not able to make out what she was seeing. "It's me"

"I can't see...." She replied softly, rubbing her eyes. She felt something being lifted off her face and then saw a blonde guy sitting on the bed next to her, she lifted her hand to her head, feeling bandages.

"What happened?" She asked. Nick put his hand in hers, smiling with a huge grin.

"These people bombed the World Trade Center baby....You were lucky to get out" Nick replied. He slid his hand over her hand, feeling the ring he'd given her still on her finger. A nurse came in, telling him to leave. Nick leaned over and pressed his lips to hers.

"I love you...I'm so happy your alright" Nick whispered, walked out of the room. Emily sat up in the bed, eyes wide.

"He called me Tiff" She exclaimed out loud. She reached down and touched the ring on her finger, not remembering how it got there.
