My Brown Family Tree

I have tried my best to figure out my Brown family tree and with several years searching, this is what I have came up with. It stands to be corrected and added on to.

.1 Samuel Brown, Sr. b. Prior to 1696 in England or Scotland-Indian Trader- Augusta, Georgia, who on 14 June 1736 had orders from Mr. James Oglethorpe for a 500 acres lot and house in Fort Augusta, GA.

March 1738
Mr. Samuel Brown, one of our Indian Traders, being newly come to town out of the Cherokee Nation, principally to take fome advice about a wound which he got in his head among his fellow traders, was at the Club this evening, when I went thither, and he gave me the following Relation viz.- That besides the 500 acres of land he had at Augusta, and which he was intent upon improving of there was a small Island lying in the river (Savannah), betwixt that and New Windfor(and therefore in the Province of Georgia) which he said Mr. Oglethorpe had granted him to hold by Leafe, and that he had put several People upon it to cultivate land; but that the Carolina Governor of New Windfor had taken an opportunity to drive all his men off, alledging, that it was Part of Carolina, and he would plant it himself. I could fay little to it, but thought it worth Notice here. Mr. Caufton went for Ockfead in the afternoon, much difordered and feverish.

Notes for Joseph Stubbs:
Joseph Stubbs and 1st. wife may have had 6 children.
Joseph Stubbs & Ann (or Nancy)Harvey had a son, Joseph H.Stubbs, born 1821 and possibly five other children.
The above info came from William Brewer, Jr., 440 Via Los Miradores, Redonda Beach, CA. 90277
Other records show Kezia Hickson was the first wife of Joseph Stubbs.
In 1803, Joseph went from Columbia Co., GA. to Tenn.. In 1804 he went to Butler Co., OH. and he purchased land in Preble Co., OH. on Jan. 26, 1809 (SE1/4,Sec.34,Twp4,R3-Vol 75,Bk 536.)

4.) Ann Stubbs b. 1806
NOTES:(It is most likely that Kezia Hickson Stubbs died following childbirth of Samuel Stubbs born Nov. 24, 1804 and Kezia died Nov. 26, 1804. Ann Stubbs wouldn't have been Kezia's daughter but the daughter of Joseph Stubbs 2nd. wife.)

NOTES: Notice the name changed to Chapmon!!
Maggie was the dau. of John Lofton Garrett and Ann (UNK).
I do not have death dates or burial places for Sam or Maggie. I also do not have the surname for Maggies mom. It is possible that John L. Garrett had been married before, and that Ann was Maggie's Stepmother, as she shows up in the 1880 census as only 14 years older than Maggie.
More about Sam Allen Chapmon:
Description: Short, compact built, black hair and dark complexion. Dry sense of humor- hard to tell when he was joking.
Miscellaneous: Toxey remembers him dying a couple years after his (Sam's) wife, possibly early 1930's.
Miscellaneous: records may exist in Columbia, Jackson or Kokomo areas ?
Occupation: repaired clocks/watches
Race/Ethnicity: Choctaw, I supect it came from his mom's family. Perrys show up on the earliest of the Choctaw treaties, but I have yet to connect the names.
Religion: Methodist ?
More about Maggie Garrett:
Education: 1880, Attended school within the past year, but cannot read or write, already working as "house laborer"- per Simpson Co. Census.
Family business: Family possibly of Garrett Snuff CO. ? I have been unable to find any proof of this, but it was a family story. Also rumored to be related to Sherrif/Outlaw - Pat Garrett. Possible, but unlikely and undocumented. The Garrett Snuff CO. was based in Delaware years agi, and efforts to Contact Descendants who might know of a connection have proved fruitless. Since"our" Garretts had been in MS. for several Generations before Maggie, the connection would probably be remote.

.........Murder of Samuel Brown & Mary Mooney (Hickson)Brown..........

Samuel & Mary Brown married in Georgia. They lived in Richmond Co., Ga. before locating to Washington Co., GA. In 1811/12 they left Georgia from Washington Co. and settled in what was then the MS. Terr. in 1798. The MS. Terr. was divided into the State of Mississippi and the Ala. Terr. in 1817. On Dec. 10, 1817 Mississippi was admitted to the Union as the 20th. State. In 1820 Samuel and most of his family lived in Wayne Co., MS. Between 1820-1830 Samuel and Isham (his son) were in Simpson Co., MS.
The first settlement made on Rials Creek was made by a man named Gideon Rials (Rayals). The next was made by Samuel Brown, who settled near the head of this creek.
This place is noted for having been the scene of a heartless and bloody tragedy. Samuel & Mary Brown, both of whom were very old (90-100) were the only white persons living there. They owned several negroes and were generally thought to have a considerable amount of money.
One night (Sept. 10, 1837) three negroes all of who bore the name Henry, and a woman by the name of Rose, murdered the old man and his wife for there money, and killed two or three negroes who knew of the killing, to prevent them from testfying against them.
A man by the name of (Andrew ?) Miller (a white man) was charged with having instigating the murder and was alledged to have recieved the greater part of the money. He was prosecuted for the crime. Three of the negroes, two of the Henrys and the colored woman Rose were convicted of the murder and hanged by William J. Toler, who was then Sheriff, near the place where T.J. Peacock lived.
A change of venue was obtained in Miller's case,to Hinds Co. He died in jail before there was any final disposition of the case.

*** A little more detail of the murders as reported in the Western Weekly Review, Franklin, Tennessee, December 22, 1837.***

On the night of the 25th. instant (the date probably reported wrong) the most unprecedented murder in the record of crimes was committed in Simpson County, Mississippi. Samuel Brown, of the age 98 years, and his wife, a very old lady, were both murdered in their house, together with three negroes. Mr. Brown was a prudent, saving old man, and had the reputation in his neighborhood of having on hand a large sum of silver, and on that night some fiend, in human shape, approached the house, and from appearance, with a light wood knot and hatchet, broke the skulls of both old persons in a most frightful and lacerated manner, and with the same brutal barbarity, killed three negroes, and threw two men on the fire, and left the negroe woman weltering in gore on her bed. All Mr. Brown's silver, as his neighbor's say, to the amount of $8000, was taken out of his chest: $350 paper money, in the chest, was left.
One negro woman of the place, not murdered, says at a late hour of the night she waked from her sleep by a noise; that she ran out and beheld her master and mistress lying on the porch murdered; and someone with a torch in his hand forcing a negro man into the house, as was afterwards murdered and thrown on the fire. The woman, afraid to stir gave no alarme until morning, when the neighbors assembled to behold this awful sight. No evidence has yet been discovered that would give the slightest clue to the murderer. -- But the public is turning to a certain individual well known in that neighborhood. The hand of justice will overtake him.--

The exact location of the burial place of Samuel & Mary Brown is not known to me. On Aug. 29, 1937 J.P. Edwards (GG Grandson of Samuel) delivered a History of the Brown Family, at a Brown Reunion. (There wasn't much info in it.)At this reunion it was decided to place a Monument at the graves of Samuel & Mary. The Monument was placed (although is it at their graves ?) The monument can be located near the head of Rials Creek on property once owned by Samuel. It is near the foot of a knoll where the homestead once stood. To find it one may need a guide. The marker is a small granite stone (appx. 30"x12" & 6" out of the ground) The best way to (appox) locate the marker:Start at the jct. of Airport Road & Rials Creek Road. Go East on Airport one mile and on the right side of the road (south)is an alum. gate. About 1/4 mile south of gate at the bottom of a knoll the marker can be found. For a Guide Contact:Gerald Brown-436 Rials Creek Rd. Mendenhall, MS. 39114; (601)-849-3403 Magee listed.
