In April of 1973, as his mother was sleeping, Edmund picked up a hammer and attacked, beating her over the head with the claw hammer and then slitting her throat. He then decapitated her and raped her headless corpse. Edmund then proceeded to cut out his mother's larynx and attempt to shove it down the garbage disposal. But when he turned the switch on the disposal jammed and the chords came flying back up at him. He was later quoted to have saying "It seemed appropriate, as much as she had bitched and screamed at me over the years." Edmund also told police that "Even when she was dead, she was still bitching at me. I couldn't get her to shut up!" Edmund finally decided to hide his mother's corpse in a closet after using her head as a dart board.

That evening, unsure of what to do, and not yet satisfied, Edmund called his mother's best friend, Sally Hallett, and invited her to a surprise dinner for his mother. As she walked into the house, Edmund clubbed and strangled her with the scarf he had taken from one of his past victims. He then cut off her head and left her naked body on his bed while he slept.
