CONSTITUTION

ARTICLE I

Name and Objectives

SECTION I:

The name of the association shall be the Appaloosa Distance Ride Association. This association shall not be conducted or operated for profit and no part of any profits or remainder of residue from dues or donations to the association shall be to the benefit of any member or individual.

SECTION 2:

The objectives of this association are:

a. The recognition of registered Appaloosas in distance riding in the Midwest. This recognition will also include N/C papered Appaloosas.

b. To hold an AERC, UMECRA, and ApHC sanctioned competitive and endurance ride.

c. To provide ApDRA members a High-scoring and First Appaloosa awards in competitive, LD, and endurance ride divisions.

d. To better inform people as to what distance riding is about.

1. Promote youth in distance riding.

2. Help new riders make it to and through their first ride.

e. Aid efficient record keeping in the ApHC Distance Program.

1. Promote a better ApHC Distance Program.

F. To promote and encourage the breeding of Appaloosas suitable for distance riding.

SECTION 3:

The members of this association shall adopt and at the annual meeting may revise and/or add such by-laws as may be required to carry out these objectives.

BY-LAWS

ARTICLE I

Membership

SECTION 1: ELIGIBILITY:

Membership is open to any individual or household interested in Appaloosas and distance riding and residing in the states of: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, and Ohio. Associate memberships will be accepted from anywhere.

SECTION 2: Dues:

a. Dues for an individual and a household will be determined and published yearly. A household shall consist of two adults (eighteen years or older) and any minor dependents living at

the same address. Associate memberships, consisting of the newsletter only, will be available.

b. Dues are payable to the Treasurer by March first each year. Nomination for year-end awards will be accepted beginning on the day of membership.

c. New members may join at any time. If they wish to join at a ride for which they have received mileage and points, they must have the proper membership form dated and signed by a dues-paying member of ApDRA. In turn, this form must be received in the mail by the Treasurer, with proper monies, no later than one week after the ride for which they wish to begin attaining credit.

d. Any member writing a non-sufficient funds check to ApDRA shall have all membership rights and benefits revoked. Said person shall be liable for any and all bank charges made to ApDRA, as well as the amount of the N.S.F. check, before full

membership privileges will be restored.

SECTION 3: TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP:

a. Any individual or household membership who deliberately misrepresents the Appaloosa breed, knowingly provides misinformation on sign-up forms, registration

forms, or registering for awards to ApDRA, shall be denied membership or current membership shall be canceled by a two-thirds majority vote of those assembled at any regular meeting.

 

 

ARTICLE II

Officers and Meetings

SECTION 1:

The officers of ApDRA shall consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent.

A. Duties of the President:

The President shall preside at all meetings of the ApDRA association. He/she shall cast the deciding vote in case of a tie, maintain communications with the UMECRA Board of Directors, and appoint an interim officer in case of a vacated office during the current year. He/she shall also be responsible for one of ApDRA's votes at the UMECRA annual meeting. He/she shall also contact the Board of Directors as to suggestions for the agenda for the annual meeting and have the Secretary get the agenda printed in the newsletter prior to the annual meeting.

B. Duties of the Vice-President:

The Vice-President shall stand in for the President and preside at all meetings of the ApDRA association if the President is unavailable. He/she shall maintain communications with the various distance organizations, and shall be appointed ride manager of the AERC, UMECRA, and ApHC sanctioned competitive and endurance ride each year.

C. Duties of the Secretary:

1. Take minutes at meetings and write them up for printing in the ApDRA newsletter.

2. Handle all correspondence regarding potential ApDRA membership.

3. Keep current the ApDRA Constitution and by-laws and make sure this is printed at least once a year in the newsletter, as well as sending a copy to each new member who joins ApDRA after the Constitution is printed in the newsletter.

4.Accumulate and print an agenda for each annual ApDRA meeting.

D. Duties of the Treasurer:

1. Handle ApDRA checking account and pay all bills submitted on the behalf of ApDRA.

2. Submit quarterly reports to the ApDRA membership as to financial condition.

3. Accept ApDRA dues, send receipts to members, and keep a current membership list which should be submitted to the ApDRA membership on a quarterly basis.

4. Accept all newsletter ad monies and forward receipts to advertisers.

5. Handle all payment of the bills for the ApDRA ride, accept donations for the ride and keep a record of credits/debits for the ride to be submitted as a separate report to the ApDRA membership.

6. Submit a year-end annual report at the annual meeting in regards to total cost of credits and debits.

E. Duties of the Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent:

1. Obtain and keep files of registration papers for ApDRA membership Appaloosas competing for year-end awards.

2. Total points and mileage for year end awards and purchase awards after approval of the ApDRA Board is received.

3. Handle cash in of ride certificates for actual awards.

F. Appointed Offices:

At the annual meeting each year, the President shall appoint a Newsletter Editor from volunteers from the body. The newsletter editor will, in the first newsletter of the year, print a list of tentative deadlines for the up coming year. In the November newsletter he/she shall announce the pending agenda for the annual meeting and encourage members to send suggestions to the President.

SECTION 2: The term of office shall be for one year.

SECTION 3: Board of Directors: A Board of Directors, consisting of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent and the Newsletter Editor shall:

a. Handle any problems that occur between meetings.

b. Set up agendas for meetings and have them printed in the newsletter prior to the meeting.

c. Be available for clarification of ApDRA constitution and by-laws.

d. Handle any ApDRA emergency business.

e. Does not have authority to change the ApDRA constitution and By-laws.

f May call a special ApDRA meeting of the entire membership and may so inform the membership by mail.

g. The Board shall set the time and place of the ApDRA annual meeting and awards presentation.

 

ARTICLE III

Elections

SECTION 1: Elections shall be held at the annual meeting each year.

a. Nominations shall be open to the floor and candidates shall be elected by secret written ballot from the present year’s membership.

SECTION 2: The new officers shall take office immediately upon the conclusion of the election of their office and each retiring officer shall turn over to his/her successor in office all properties and records relating to that office within thirty (30) days after the election.

ARTICLE IV

Awards

SECTION 1: A high scoring Appaloosa in competitive or a First Appaloosa award in Endurance or Limited Distance will be provided by ApDRA. Certificates will be awarded to ApDRA members at year end, value of said certificate to be determined on a yearly basis by the Board of Directors. These awards should be noted on the ApDRA ride report form.

a. All registered Appaloosas, both regular and N/C papers, are eligible for this award. Copies of papers must be made available upon request.

SECTION 2: MILEAGE AWARD. This will be based on actual mileage. No double mileage for anything. The award will go to the horse, so any ApDRA member can be riding it.

a. One award for competitive.

b. One award for endurance.

 

SECTION 3: HI-SCORING HORSE AWARD. For both endurance, limited distance and competitive our points shall be based on the following chart system:

Points will be awarded to the horse in a Senior and Junior division depending on the age of the rider. The junior division will be divided according to UMECRA guidelines. In order to qualify for year-end awards in the junior division said juniors must have a minimum of 100 endurance miles or 100 competitive miles. Horses ridden by Juniors will not have points accumulated in the Senior division. Only points computed on the best 215 miles for competitive rides and points computed on the best 350 miles for endurance rides will apply toward these awards, except in the case of a tie for Year-end. Ties will be broken by adding additional 'Best Rides' in increments of 25 miles for competitive, 50 miles for endurance, until said tie is broken.

a. Five Senior awards for competitive: Grand Champion, Reserve Champion, third, fourth and fifth place. No award shall be given in any placing with less than 100 miles.

b. Five Senior awards for endurance: Grand champion, Reserve Champion, third, fourth and fifth place. No award shall be given in any placing with less than 200 miles.

c. Two Junior awards for competitive: Grand Champion and Reserve Champion.

d. Two Junior awards for endurance: Grand Champion and Reserve Champion.

e. Five awards for Limited Distance: Grand Champion, Reserve Champion, third, fourth, and fifth place. No award shall be given in any placing with less than 100 miles.

SECTION 4: ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD. First year riders or those having ridden three rides or less prior to the year in which they nominate for points are eligible for this award. Each horse and rider team will be considered for the award based on points accumulated throughout the season. The team with the largest number of points and mileage will be the winner of this award. Only seniors will be considered for this

award.

a. One traveling award.

b. One smaller award to be kept by the winner.

SECTION 5: VERSATILITY CHALLENGE AWARD. This award shall be given to the owner of the Appaloosa that completes the most miles and points each year in both competitive and endurance rides. In order to be eligible for this award, the horse must complete mileage in both the endurance and the competitive divisions. Any ApDRA member can ride the horse. No novice miles will count toward the award. This award shall travel each year to the year's winner. If this award is won three times by any one horse, it retires to the owner's possession.

a. One traveling award only.

SECTION 6: The owner of an Appaloosa going for awards in ApDRA must be a member of ApDRA for the horse to qualify for any awards. Only rides ridden by ApDRA members will accumulate toward any ApDRA Year-end award.

SECTION 7: APPROVED RIDES. Points and mileage from all ApHC approved rides are accumulated toward the ApDRA year-end awards. Endurance rides of fifty miles and up will count. Limited distance and competitive rides of twenty-five miles and up will count.

ARTICLE V

Nomination for Awards

SECTION 1: This shall be done by sending a Xerox copy of the horse's papers (front and back to the Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent prior to or at the horse's first ride. At that time those riders eligible for the Rookie of the Year award shall notify the Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent. If a copy of a horse's papers has been mailed in previous years, no new copy needs to be mailed, unless a change of ownership has occurred.

SECTION 2: Both N/C Appaloosas and regular-papered Appaloosas shall be eligible for all awards. However, all horses must be registered with the ApHC and cannot be registered for ApDRA awards without official papers.

SECTION 3: A complete list of all horses registered for awards shall be printed in the newsletter for the benefit of all competitors.

SECTION 4: Riders are responsible for keeping track of their own points and mileage on the ride report form that is printed in the newsletter. These results should be sent to the Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent every two months for printing in the newsletter. To be eligible for any year-end awards, all results must be received by the Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent later than November 15th of the year for which awards are anticipated. Any points earned at rides after this date shall be counted toward the following year's awards. Any report forms received after November 15 will NOT be accepted.

SECTION 5: The Points Keeper/Ride Correspondent will issue an official point form to each rider that requires the signature of the ride manager at each ride attended. This MUST be used in order to qualify for year-end awards. A photocopy of the ApHC medallion book or records of any sanctioning body approved by ApHC can be substituted.

SECTION 6: Any non-UMECRA ride results submitted by any ApDRA member must have a verifiable ride manager's or ride secretary's signature and telephone number on the report form in order for any miles and/or points earned at that ride to be counted toward year-end awards.
