The Message of the Truth

"New Thought is simply the rediscovery of Jesus, his teaching, his vision and the genius of his life. He came declaring himself to be the Son of God, but far more emphatically the Son of man. He based his claim of being a Son of God on the fact that he was the Son of man - who is the Son of God. He did not claim unique Sonship of God but boldly declared that all men are God’s Sons. "It is written in your law, I said ye are gods."

He came as the great type-man, to reveal to the world what man really is - what it means to be a Son of God. Of him the world may say not only, ‘Behold the man,’ but ‘Behold man.’ Man truly is the Son of God, the heir of God and the joint heir with Jesus Christ.

Before the astonished sense-dimmed eyes of the world, Jesus lived the true life of a Son of God. He turned water into wine, not a miraculous act for the Son of God, nor one difficult to comprehend now that we know scientifically that there is no essential difference between any two substances. He walked on the waters and he stilled the waves. Surely the waves would obey their Creator and therefore they would obey the voice of his Son. Fathers strive to train their sons to reach a certain goal and our Father is training us to our own God-hood.

Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes. He had learned the creative art of his Father, as we should learn the creative art of his Father who is also ours. Hear him declare the purpose of God for his Son--humanity. ‘Verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do; for what things so ever he (the Father) doeth, there also doeth the Son likewise.’

Jesus healed the sick, a most natural thing for the Son of the Creator of health to do. A great many people were healed and the record of the healings not only takes up a large part of the story of his life, but is an integral part of his gospel--the ‘good news’ to man. That healing might not be understood to be his function alone, Jesus taught his disciples to heal and gave them as explicit a command to heal the body as he did to preach the gospel. At his final departure he gave them this promise: ‘These signs shall follow them that believe, in thy name shall they lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.’

The blind were made to see, the deaf to hear, the lame to walk, and even the dead were raised, but always the main object of Jesus was that his followers should imbibe the Spirit and carry on after he was gone. ‘He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also: and greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto my Father.’ This promise was given not only to the followers of Jesus at that time but to all in every age.

Who can measure the illness and suffering which the world has known that it need never have experienced had the Church not lost the vision? It is obvious that a religion whose vision is lost has not its full potency. "Where there is no vision, the people perish." Jesus also declared, ‘I and my Father are one,’ that is, God and man are one.

Here is the mystic union, the recognition of which creates divinity and endows with all power. Finally, he commanded us to seek first the inner kingdom, the realm of divine reality and promised that then all good things would be added unto us.

On the basis of the Truth which his soul discerned, Jesus made two universal promises: ‘Whosoever cometh to me I will in no wise cast out’; and ‘Whatsoever ye ask in my name, believing, nothing doubting in your heart, shall be done unto you by my Father.’ These promises we believe, and we call all the world to believe them, knowing that they will never fail.

What is ‘New Thought’? It is the knowledge that Jesus meant these promises. It is new because, although it dates back to the time of Jesus, and had been forgotten, it is now being rediscovered. Its full acceptance by man will be the redemption of the world. To glorify Jesus, the world has looked upon his ‘wonder-works’ as miracles or broken laws, but he tells us that the law shall never be broken. ‘Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.’

The disciples learned that law and wrought wonders so that Gibbon, an agnostic writer, in his History of Rome is compelled to admit: ‘They reproduced his wonder-works even to the raising of the dead.’ The Church lost the vision and for seventeen hundred years failed to use its strongest weapon - the power of healing. Jesus came to redeem the world from its sin and suffering, and the Church could not carry on his work as he expected it to do, to save and to heal the world, because it had lost its spiritual aim.

Is it not time for the Church to awaken and heal the sick and raise the dead? He gave the promise that we should know the Truth and the Truth would make us free. If we are not free, it is obvious that we do not know the Truth.

Reverently, but assuredly we proclaim that we have found that ‘Truth’ which Jesus not only promised would make us free, but which he proved, by being the only free man of history. We know that what we have found is the Truth, for it performs what he promised it would. Our bodies have been healed, our affairs adjusted, our lives made secure and our sinful natures purified, and by his grace we are able to perform these services for others. Verily, ‘by their fruits ye shall know them.’

Jesus told us that the kingdom is at hand. At hand means everywhere, and this statement means that God’s perfect kingdom is universally present. If that is so, where is there room for evil? It is nonexistent except as a false consciousness of man. When that consciousness is changed the seeming evil disappears. That is the marvelous secret of Jesus’ power which he endeavored to impart to humanity.

He tells us also that this kingdom is within. Jesus always went into the within for all wisdom and all power. This, then, is the avenue of approach to the divine knowledge and power. These statements of Jesus: ‘The kingdom of heaven is within you’; ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand’; ‘I and my Father are one’; and the promise ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven and all these things shall be added unto you’ - are the four foundational statements of Jesus, and though they have been largely ignored, because not understood, they give us the whole Truth.
