"Really it's too bad Mom isn't here!" exclaimed Jill. "This food isn't fit to eat."

She and her father and her two brothers were having dinner, her mom having left that day to spend a holiday with a friend.

"I must say Sally isn't much of a cook," agreed John.

"Her sandwiches are so unpalatable, I couldn't eat them," said Richard.

Their father smiled, but said nothing.

"And my uniform wasn't pressed when I got up, so I was nearly late for school," grumbled Jill.

"How long is Mom going to be away?" asked John.

"For a month I think," answered his father.

"A MONTH!" exclaimed Jill and Richard.

"And you're pleased about it?" questioned John.

"Certainly" said Dad. Your mother needs a change badly, largely because you three make so many demands on her."

There was a shocked silence.

"Oh no, Dad, that isn't so... really it isn't," John said. "The house isn't the same without her, is it?" he asked Jill and Richard.

"Of course it isn't!" came from both.

"I'm glad to hear that," their father replied. "And from now on you will see that the food is fit to eat, if you please Jill, and also that your uniforms are pressed. The boys can make their own sandwiches and keep their own clothes in order. Sally has enough extra work to do as it is. And you will continue this way when your mother returns. Is that understood?"

"We'll see that there aren't any more inconveniences than we can help," announced Jill.

"Thank you. I knew you'd look at it my way if I explained it to you," replied their Father.
