Hello Everyone -

Many of us have things to do in life that we would rather leave undone. There are probably duties which we have to perform whether we like them or not. The best thing to do is to change our attitude towards them. We should learn not to dislike them, and to get them done as soon as possible, so they won't be like some dark shadow hanging over us.

Suppose, for example, you have the job of stamping eggs, which is admittedly not a very exciting occupation. But do you realise that when the surface of your mind is occupied with something mechanical, the depths are said to work more quickly?

So while you are busy working with your hands, you have the opportunity of working out some problems, or of learning something. You may find a quicker way of doing the job. Anyway, you do understand what I mean, do you not? I hope so, at any rate.

We cannot go through life doing only the things we like doing, and it would not be the best thing for us if we could. It is good discipline for us to have a variety of things to do, both those we like and those we like less. But to allow the latter to worry us is foolish.

There is romance to be found in most human activities if we look for it. We should learn to regard life with the eye of the poet and artist, and to try to find as much beauty in things as we can. Our heritage is beyond all reckoning, and beauty is our daily portion if we have eyes to see, ears to hear, and understanding hearts. The poet and the artist see things that other people miss, and why should we not try to see them, too?

Charles Kingsley said: "Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do that day, something which must be done whether you like it or not. Being forced to work, and forced to do your best, will breed in you temperance and self-control, cheerfulness and content, and a hundred virtues which the idle never know."

Don't grouse at the things you have to do which don't appeal to you, but look on them as service done for your fellowmen, and that should make you change your views about them and persuade you to do them with a will.

Yours,
June
