Planets Racko

Learn the names of the planets and their order from the sun.

To Make:

Using two blue file folders, I glued 9 library pockets in each as shown above. I wrote the names of the planets on the pockets in their order from the sun.

NOTE: To make the pockets look a little more colorful, there are stickers available that picture the planets and these could be added to each pocket.

THE PLAYING CARDS:

The playing cards are simply blue 3X5 index cards trimmed slightly so they do not cover the pocket above. A name of a planet is written on each card. I made four of each planet for a two player game for a total 36 cards.

To Play:

The cards are shuffled and dealt out one at a time to all players. As a player receives each card, he places it in the first available pocket starting at the top left, filling the top row first. After all the pockets have been filled, the remaining cards are placed in the center as a draw pile.

The first player draws the top card and places it in the proper pocket, unless the card in the pocket is already the right one. The player discards the card he does not want. The next player may select the discarded card or the top card from the draw pile. He places the card in the proper pocket and discards. Play continues until one player has all the pockets filled with proper cards. He then shouts, "Racko."

Once the child has learned the order of the planets, change the playing filefolders to have numbers rather than the name of the planets on the pocket.
