Consonant Battle
There is fun drill on phonics with this non-competive game for one or more players.
To Make:
I used a piece of green posterboard and glued on two library pockets and the "score sheet" that can be seen in the picture above. I covered the "score sheet" with clear contact paper so it could be written on with dry-erase markers. I added the Winnie the Pooh stickers as they were something I had on hand and they were a favorite of my daughter.
THE PLAYING CARDS:
There are two sets of cards needed for this game.
PINK CARDS:
The pink cards each have a consonant written on them.
BLUE CARDS:
The blue cards have short vowel word endings written on them.
To Play:
The play is a little different with this game as the "consonants" are the one "battling" for the highest score.
One player may play alone, or players may work together.
The consonant cards (pink) are shuffled. The top card is drawn and placed in the pocket on the left. The entire stack of ending cards (blue) are placed in the pocket on the right.
Players look at the letters and see if they form a word. If they form a word, the card is removed and placed in a pile. If they do not make a word, the card is removed and placed in a separate pile. Players may work together on this or take turns.
When all the ending cards have been viewed and placed in their appropriate pile, the "word" pile is counted and the score is recorded (one point for each word made) using a dry-erase marker.
Then another consonant card is placed in the pocket on the left and all the ending cards are returned to the pocket on the right. Play continues in this manner until the score card is filled.
After the score card is filled, one consonant is declared the winner.
VARIATIONS: By making new cards, beginning blends may battle. Also, more difficult word endings may be made for drill.
