THE KING OF THE BUNGLE

AS EVERYBODY KNOWS, I AIN'T A LION WHEN I SAY THAT THE TIGER IS THE KING OF THE JUNGLE. EVEN THE MIGHTY TIGER, HOWEVER, HAS TO WATCH OUT FOR ANOTHER KIND OF KING, AND THAT IS THE "KING OF THE BUNGLE."

YOU ARE PLAYING SPADES ON THE ZONE, AND HAVE BEEN DEALT THE FOLLOWING CARDS ON THE FIRST HAND OF THE GAME. THERE IS A TOTAL 13 BID AS SHOWN.

YOU ARE IN THE LEAD ON TRICK 1, WHAT CARD SHOULD YOU LEAD?

  North 3

West 3

    East 4
    South 3

6 A
2 4 5 7 J
4 K
2 6 7 K

MANY PLAYERS IN THIS SITUATION WILL LEAD THE DIAMOND 4, WITH THE HOPE OF CLEARING THEIR HAND OF THE SUIT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. IN THIS CASE, HOWEVER, IF YOU DO NOT LEAD A HEART, YOU ARE MAKING A MISTAKE.

MISTAKE

IF, ON HIGH BID HANDS, YOU LEAD AWAY FROM KINGS WHEN YOU HAVE OTHER ALTERNATIVES, YOU ARE OCCASIONALLY LOSING KINGS OR LIMITING YOUR PARTNERíS TRUMP TRICKS, AND YOU AND YOUR PARD ARE LOSING MORE SPADES GAMES THAN YOU SHOULD.

LEADING AWAY FROM KINGS IS ONE OF THE TWO SURE-FIRE WAYS TO KILL AN OTHERWISE HEALTHY MONARCH (THE OTHER METHOD IS COVERED IN THE NEXT EXAMPLE). VERY FREQUENTLY, IF YOU LEAD AWAY FROM A KING AND YOUR PARTNER DOES NOT HAVE THE ACE IN THE SUIT, EAST WILL BE ABLE TO WIN THE TRICK WITHOUT PLAYING THE ACE.

IF EAST HAS THE QUEEN AND THE ACE, HE WILL WIN THE TRICK WITH THE QUEEN, PROBABLY LEAD THE ACE, AND YOU WILL EITHER LOSE YOUR KING IF YOU STARTED WITH ONLY 2 CARDS IN THE SUIT, OR BE STUCK HOPING THAT YOUR KING WILL SURVIVE A THIRD ROUND OF THE SUIT. MOST OFTEN IT WILL NOT, OR IF IT DOES, YOUR PARTNER WILL HAVE BEEN PLANNING ON TRUMPING THE THIRD ROUND OF THAT SUIT AND SOMETIMES NOT BE ABLE TO FIND ANOTHER WAY TO SQUEEZE IN HIS PLANNED TRUMP WINNER.

THE SAME TYPE OF SITUATION CAN ARISE IF WEST HAS THE ACE OF THE SUIT AND DOESN'T PLAY IT ON THE FIRST ROUND. EAST WILL WIN THE TRICK WITH THE QUEEN (OR SOMETIMES EVEN A LOWER CARD IF YOUR PARD HAS ONLY LOW CARDS IN THE SUIT).

WHEN HOLDING A KING, YOU WANT ONE OF THE OPPONENTS TO LEAD THAT SUIT. IF WEST LEADS THE SUIT THERE IS NO WAY THAT YOU CAN NOT WIN YOUR KING AS LONG AS ALL PLAYERS HAVE AT LEAST 2 CARDS IN THE SUIT. IF EAST LEADS LOW IN THE SUIT, AFTER YOU PLAY LOW, ALMOST ALWAYS EITHER THE ACE WILL COME OUT OR YOUR PARTNER WILL BE ABLE TO WIN THE TRICK WITH SOME LOWER CARD. IN EITHER CASE, YOUR TEAM DOES NOT LOSE AN EXPECTED WINNER AND FACE EITHER GETTING SET OR FAILING TO SET THE OPPONENTS.

WHENEVER POSSIBLE, YOU MUST SHOW YOUR KINGS THE RESPECT THAT THEY DESERVE BY NOT LEADING AWAY FROM THEM. OTHERWISE THEY MAY ABDICATE THE THRONE AS THEY GET EATEN OR TRUMPED BY A PONE.

ON THE NEXT HAND OF THE GAME, YOU ARE DEALT THE FOLLOWING CARDS AND THE BIDS ARE AS SHOWN.

  North 3

West 3

    East 4
    South 3

4 6 K
6 7 9
2 4 K
4 8 9 A

ON THIS HAND, WEST LEADS THE 3 OF CLUBS....YOUR PARTNER PLAYS THE 5....EAST PLAYS THE QUEEN....AND YOU WIN THE TRICK WITH THE ACE.

WHAT CARD SHOULD YOU LEAD ON THE NEXT TRICK?

IF YOU LEAD ANYTHING BUT THE 4 OF CLUBS YOU ARE MAKING A MISTAKE.

MISTAKE

IF, ON HIGH BID HANDS, YOU LEAD SUITS THAT HAVE NOT YET BEEN PLAYED WHEN YOU HAVE OTHER ALTERNATIVES, YOU ARE OCCASIONALLY KILLING YOUR PARTNERíS KINGS, AND YOU AND YOUR PARD ARE LOSING MORE SPADES GAMES THAN YOU SHOULD.

ONE OF THE WORST THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO YOUR PARTNER IS TO LEAD A SUIT IN WHICH HE HAS THE KING WHEN THE ACE IN THAT SUIT HAS NOT YET BEEN PLAYED. WHEN THE PLAYER SITTING THIRD ON A TRICK HAS THE KING, HE MUST EITHER PLAY THE KING (IF THE ACE HAS NOT APPEARED) AND ALMOST ALWAYS LOSE IT TO THE ACE, OR NOT PLAY THE KING, FREQUENTLY ALLOWING THE OPPONENT SITTING FOURTH TO WIN THE TRICK WITHOUT HAVING TO PLAY THE ACE. IF THIS HAPPENS, HIS KING WILL FREQUENTLY BE TRUMPED ON THE THIRD ROUND OF THE SUIT.

SINCE YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT CARDS ARE IN YOUR PARDíS HAND, THE ONLY WAY TO BE CERTAIN OF NOT LEADING INTO ONE OF HIS KINGS IS TO AVOID LEADING A SUIT THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN PLAYED.

IN THIS EXAMPLE, SINCE YOU HAVE ALREADY LEARNED TO NOT LEAD AWAY FROM YOUR DIAMOND KING, THE ONLY SAFE OPTION IS TO LEAD ANOTHER CLUB. IF YOU WERE TO LEAD A HEART, DOING SO COULD POSSIBLY KILL THE KING IF IT IS IN YOUR PARTNERíS HAND, AND THAT COULD VERY POSSIBLY LEAD TO YOUR TEAM GETTING SET ON ITS BID.

BECAUSE IT IS FAR BETTER THAT YOUR PARTNERíS EMPEROR HAVE NO CLOTHES THAN BE ASSASSINATED, YOU SHOULD NEVER OFFER HIM A NEW SUIT UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER VIABLE ALTERNATIVE.

AS YOU PLAY OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS, FOLLOW THESE TWO TIPS AND WATCH TO SEE HOW THEY SAVE YOU FROM HAVING YOUR TEAM'S KINGS KILLED. ALSO, WATCH FOR YOUR OPPONENTS TO MAKE THESE MISTAKES, AND HOW DOING SO CAUSES THEM TO SUFFER THE TERRIBLE FATE OF HAVING A
KING OF THE BUNGLE!

GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY SPADING!
