The Wide World of WMM has moved to a New Location!!
Be sure to go there and bookmark the new site.
This site will be maintained as a crappy mirror site with no graphics
Primarily for lamers with crappy windows settings that can't see the gifs, jpgs and background properly. Continue to use this site if this applies to you.
This location will also remain up for you to use if for some reason the new site suffers technical difficulties
This is my favourite band. They are 100% Canadian; hailing from the Paris of the Prairies
AKA Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is a three piece band with a big sound.
Frontman Shaun Verreault provides lead vocals and guitar. Words can't describe how
well he does both. The range of his voice and the creative way he uses it are
simply amazing. He plays guitar like he was born with one in his hands. Soulful
and electrifying, you can't hear him play without listening with your full undivided
attention. The sound is brand new. I can stand at a concert and think to myself
"I have never heard anyone play a guitar like that." He can remind you of an original
like Stevie Ray or Jimi (RIP)without rehashing their music.
Earl Pereira covers BASS duties and backup vocals. The bass guitar is not meant for playing
basslines only. Not in Earl's book anyway it would seem. In a band with only one
guitar , Earl formidably takes up the slack to keep the big sound. He seriously
brings up the funkiness level of the band which is one of the things that makes
the band's sound so unique. His playing is interesting and impressive. Earl plays
the bass like it is an instrument rather than a helpful background noise maker.
Just barely in his twenties, I'm sure Earl will someday be known as one of the BASS greats
of our time.
Safwan Javed's masterful drumming fills out the band's sound, pulling it all
together. He was born in Charlottetown and moved to Saskatoon at a very young age.
(That doesn't have anything to do with anything I just knew it and wanted to tell
everybody). Safwan is the glue of this band. The sound of his drums is the platform
that Shawn and Earl stand on while they play back and forth to each other and his
brain shaking solos are the final ingredient for the special atmosphere of a live
Wide Mouth Mason set. Saf also does vocals. On MY OLD SELF, (my favourite song)
Saf is featured delivering some Urdu lyrics. Anyone who was lucky enough
to take in the Mel Lastman Square show this summer was treated to a fantastic rendition of
this number that included special lighting and delay effects on Saf's mic. I can
say this with complete confidence: It was Awesome.
Wednesday, September 17. The Joker Nightclub, Q107 Private Party.
This was a private thank you party that Q107 threw for it's clients.
I was fortunate enough to be there. Musical guests were Powderfinger(from Australia),
Wide Mouth Mason and Junkhouse. The bar was open, food was served and drinks were free!
WMM went on after Powderfinger sometime around 10pm. The masons were in fine form as
they performed our favourite music for us. They were on stage for just over an hour
which was long enough for them to work the crowd into a happy excited groovin mood.
This is no mean feat considering the audience was filled with music industry types that
were used to seeing fabulous live acts and were more apt to think:
"Hey these guys are pretty good. I bet I can make some MONEY off them"
as they watch the three dollar $ign$ perform on stage.
The band suffered some technical difficulties during My Old Self.
Somewhere along the maze of patchcords, pedals and powercables to Shaun's
guitar something bought the farm and Shaun was without juice so to speak.
A tribute to their maturity, professionalism and talent, the band played on.
It was interesting to hear the song(my favourite one as if you didn't know) played
sans guitar. Earl usually plays that number pretty mellow or at least he does compared
to how he played it this time. Some people have a hard time hearing the bass between
the drums and guitar (not to mention vocals) so it was a nice chance to
showcase Earl's talent.
Usually the only time you hear him on his own is when he's
playing a solo. But this time he was playing the song along with Saf's drums and
Shaun's vocals and it sounded great. They got Shaun's guitar working before the song
was over and they finished it off very well. The only complaint I have is that I
thought that Saf's mic could have be tuned up a little better, i thought it was a little
far back in the mix and we should have been able to hear him better.
There are more reports from wmm shows on my
Wide Mouth News Page
or at least they are at the new site.
After WMM's fine performance at the Joker on September 17, I went backstage
to have a few words with the band.
An important question that has been on my mind for some time was answered by
Earl:
We took some photos (watch for them to show up here sometime b4 the end of
the month) and then went to watch Junkhouse with Shaun and Earl. There was
some confusion as a drunken idiot stumbled up the stairs and fell on top of
Junkhouse's guitars. This understandably upset the roadies, one of who handed
me a couple abused guitars to hold while he enthusiastically assisted
the dizzy fellow in leaving the backstage area.
Shaun didn't seem to be fazed. I wonder if in all their touring across the
globe something similar has happened during a WMM performance? Next chance
I get I will ask one of the Mason roadies.

Here you can just pretend.
(How does the band feel about bootlegs?)
"We don't mind them at all. You mean of our stuff? We don't mind it
at all. We encourage it. Sometimes it's not up to us but if you can sneak
a tape recorder into the bar or wherever... i know the record companies
don't like it but..."
