Fall Cheaps on most US Air Fares

Most of the major airlines have extended the deadline for their Fall discount air fare sales. Tickets must now be purchased by Oct 10th. 1998.

The discounted air fares are good for travel until Nov. 30th 1998. Tickets must be purchased 14 days in advance. A Saturday-night stay is required, with a 30-day maximum. For the lowest fares, travel should take place on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Sample one-way fares (based on a required round-trip purchase) include:

  • Chicago to Detroit for $39
  • New Orleans to Cincinnati for $109
  • Chicago to Dallas/Ft. Worth for $129
  • Milwaukee to San Francisco for $139
  • Austin to Philadelphia for $169
  • New York's JFK to Los Angeles for $199
  • Orlando to San Diego for $199
  • Atlanta to Vancouver for $208
  • Washington, D.C. to Las Vegas for $229

Please note that not every airline serves every market listed above. Fares are subject to change. Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights. Tickets are non-refundable. Taxes, surcharges, and passenger-facility charges of $3-$12 per round trip apply, depending on itinerary. Other restrictions and rules may apply.

Which Online Booking System?

Selling products and services on the internet has never been easier. Cheap access to the international market place, combined with low overheads, leaves the consumer with an abundance of choice. This is especially true of the travel industry where the traditional role of the agent is being replaced by web sites which give the traveler access to quite literally, all the flights in the world. But with all this choice, comes the difficulty of deciding which agent to use. Well don't fear, we have tried and tested a few of the top travel sites to bring you our favourites.

Online Fares Worldwide

Farebusters -- Farebusters interfaces with the Airlines' own SABRE database. Lists over 200 million discounted air fares on all popular airlines to and from all destinations worldwide. It has an attractive easy to use interface. Offers to find you either the cheapest fare (regardless of availability) or the nearest actually available to your planned itinerary (with cheaper fares available at other times). Can be slow at peak times because of popularity. We found very early US time was best.
TISS -- Similar to Farebusters -- A database (located in Germany) containing discounted air fares from over 20 countries to destinations in all parts of the world. Reservations can be made both on-line and by by email.
Online Fares within the USA:
Travel Discounts -- Links to various US databases listing discounted consolidator air fares. You can check availability, reserve a flight, and purchase your fares on-line.
WTC -- This US database lists over one million discounted air fares on 50 airlines from over 200 US cities to 300 destinations worldwide.
Travelocity -- Another Online booking system using the Sabre database fares quoted are only available for flights starting and finishing within the USA. Not the easiest of interfaces to use.
FareFinders -- One of the most aggressive marketing online but only offering flights starting and finishing within the USA.
From Europe:
CHEAP FLIGHTS -- U.K. database which lists a large choice of travel agents offering discounted air fares from London and other cities in the U.K. to Bali.
Check In-- Easy to navigate U.K. database which lets you choose from a wide choice of discounted intercontinental air fares from the U.K.
AER -- German database listing (German language only) discounted air fares from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Luxemburg and Switzerland to destinations around the world. Reservations are made by email.
Malibu Travel -- One of the best-known Dutch bucket shops offering worldwide discounted fares from all Benelux countries.
From Australia & New Zealand:
Cyber air Broker -- An Australian database containing many discounted air fares from Australia and New Zealand to destinations around the world. Reservations made by email.

A Guide to Bargain Airfare Hunting.

Whenever you book a family holiday or business trip, you want to know that you got a got deal. The idea of scouring databases full of tickets for bargain flights from the comfort of our own office is very attractive. After all, everyone wants to cut out the salesman and check what's available themselves don't they?

Getting the best prices need not be an uncomfortable experience as long as you know what to expect, so read on for the essential guide to booking flights online.

Most booking interfaces give you the ability to interrogate a large database of flights. When you enter your desired itinerary, the database returns a price. If you like the price, you can make a request to reserve a ticket. This request normally takes 2 working days to be processed. It is worth reiterating that this is a request for a reservation NOT a booking. After 2 working days, you should either have confirmation of booking or the agent will come back to you with an offer. This offer usually remains open for 24 hours and should be honoured by the agent.

When shopping around for the right price, you will probably be dealing with international agents. The best bargains for internal US flights originate outside of the US. The reason for this is quite simple; no US airline is going to offer a discount to an agent who represents direct competition. So don't be scared of booking through European or Asian outlets.

Given that your tickets are probably going to come from abroad, be aware of delivery times. Normal mail can take up to two weeks but most agents will offer a courier service for an extra few dollars. Prices are usually quoted in dollars but tax varies depending on the country from which you purchase the tickets. For this reason, the prices are normally quoted without tax.

Our final pearl of wisdom is to book early so that if there are any problems you have time to sort them out. This golden rule may sound obvious but you would be surprised how often it is ignored.

Happy travelling.

Which online Hotels ? Hotels Cater More To Business Travelers

Portable phones, in-room personal computers and high-speed Internet access are some of the technologies hotels are investing in for guests. ''Business travelers want more than just a place to plug in,'' says Alan Zingale, senior associate in Coopers & Lybrand lodging and gaming group. Hotels are creating:
In-room offices. Larger hotel chains are offering guests ''at-work'' rooms equipped with multi-line phones, ergonomic chairs, special lighting, even personal computers to check email. There are 225 Marriott hotels which offer rooms with large desks, movable work lights, easily accessible dataports and ergonomic chairs. Seven of Hilton's midpriced Hilton Garden Inn Hotels have rooms with similar features. Hilton plans to have 100 Garden Inns by 2000. In October, ITT Sheraton unveiled 10 executive business suites at the Park Hyatt in San Francisco. The second room in the suite was turned into an office with an executive desk, fax machine, printer and hookups for dataports. In April, the privately owned Claremont Resort near Berkeley, Calif., opened a wing of 40 rooms offering guests a PC with high-speed Internet access, a multi-line phone with speaker phone and free local phone calls. Portable phones. Cellular and wireless phones are offered in some resorts and big-city hotels. Internet kiosks. Hilton and Infone are rolling out Internet kiosks in lobbies at Hilton hotels across the USA. Currently, 12 Hiltons have the touch-screen kiosks in their lobbies. Guests purchase Internet time with their credit card or a prepaid Internet access card. Average charge: 25 cents a minute. And Marriott is exploring offering guests WebTV, which would give them Internet access via the TV set in their room.
