Below are some photos of the construction of our garden pond that
we put in in August 2000
Our 1st preform pond wasn't deep enough to keep the fish in over winter,
so we decided to take up the old pond
and build a bigger, deeper pond.
Our new pond is
12 x 7 and holds 600 gallons.
We also have included 3 underwater lights.
The middle section of the pond is about 3' x 3' and about 3' deep
where the fish hibernate in winter.
The remaining sections of the pond range from 18" to 24"
Left to Right: Hubby dug the whole pond himself in a little over a day. Liner warming up in sun

Almost done!

In 2000, some of the pond residents included 3 KOI, 2 Shubunkins, fantails, some common goldfish and some frogs. As of mid-August, all these fish were gone (so I though). We were surprised by a great Blue Heron who visited our pond every day and took all the fish. The surprising part is that we live right in town. I've tried several methods found on newsgroups to help deter the heron but nothing has helped. As of Sept 3, we have a fruit tree netting over the pond and Harry the Heron has not gotten in there yet. Hopefully he'll get fed up and find another spot for lunch.
GREAT NEWS! One day as I was sitting by the pond feeding some of my new fish (only bought feeders cuz of Harry the Heron)-- up comes one of my pre-heron fish! Then another and another and another! We counted 10 of my old fish and they were huge! Evidentely they were hiding for THREE weeks! We hadn't seen them at all in all that time.
