"Riddle me this, riddle me that; who's afraid of the big black bat?"

REAL NAME: EDWARD NIGMA

FIRST APPEARANCE: DETECTIVE COMICS #140 (October 1948) $2,300

The Riddler is, without a doubt, my personal favorite Batman villian of all time. The Riddler is a very interesting character, and has been a persistent plague of the Dynamic Duo for over fifty years. A former employee of Bruce Wayne, the Riddler always leaves a riddle or clue for the police or Batman to puzzle over before Nigma can commit the caper. The Riddler has a mental block that forces him to leave a clue whenever he commits a crime. Batman and Robin always manage to solve the riddle in time, but the Riddler is never riddled out!

ORIGIN & HISTORY

Edward Nigma was a lowly scientist working for Bruce Wayne's mega industry. He was fired, and swore vengenge on Bruce Wayne. Nigma has since committed all sorts of crimes, but the common thread is his obsession with questions and riddles. He enjoys knowing that the Dark Knight must rack his brain trying to solve Nigma's riddles. The Riddler tests Batman to his very mental limit, but has yet to be very sucessful as a criminal, due to his clue giving.

DID YOU KNOW?

Jim Carrey broke over 250 canes during the filming of Batman Forever.

The Riddler wasn't boosted into the ranks of big time Bat villians until Frank Gorshin's portrayl of the Riddler on the 1960's Batman TV show.

The Riddler's costume has a cameo apperance in Batman and Robin. It is hanging in the left corner of the Arkham Asylum seized property room.
