At Lower Merion High school Kobe Bryant averaged 30.8 points, 12 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 4 steals, and 3.8 blocks his senior year. He was selected by USA TODAY and PARADE magazine as the national high school player of the year, named Naismith player of the year, Gatorade circle of champions high school player of the year, named state player of the year by the Philadelphia Inquirer, and to the McDonald's All-America Team. Bryant's high school coach Gregg Downer, compared his play with Micheal Jordan and Grant Hill. Kobe went to the prom with Brandy at Lower Merion. He finished H.S. as the all time leading scorer in southeastern Pennsylvania history with 2, 883 career points. More than Wilt Chamberlin! Bryant had opted to skip college and go dirictly to the NBA where he was drafted By the Charlett Hornets first round 13th overall. The Los Angles Lakers knew Kobe had talent and traded Vlade Divac to Charlett for him on 11/3/96. He made his NBA debut at the age of 18 years, 2 months, and 11 days making him the youngest player in NBA history. On NBA All Star Weekend Bryant won the slam dunk contest going between the legs for a spectacular 49/50 points he earned $20,000. In the Shick Rookie Game he set a record scoring 31 points only to lose the MVP to Philadelphia's Allen Iverson.
