This show was the last Smashing Pumpkins show before they went into the studio to record "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness". It is an audience recording with decent quality. You can hear the songs clearly, but sometimes their is a squeaky or static sound from the recording device. The quality varies on some songs, but overall it's good. This was a small show, done for charity, that was played to a crowd of only 500 people. "Pissant" is cut at the end. I also think "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" and "Fly By Night" were played at the show, but are not on this tape.
The first four songs, including the cover medley, were done solo by Billy (I think). The cover medley includes snipets of "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Graceland", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door", and "A Hard Day's Night". Billy informs the crowd, that the song "Lily" was originally written about a cat. The band were full of energy tonight, this is most noticable by Billy's screaming rendition of "Here Is No Why". James sings lead on "Take Me Down" and "Blew Away".
Towards the end of the show, the band asks who has the last ticket, number 500. They announce that they have a special prize. They play a quick little song where they sing "you're the special winner". James then goes into this crazy routine where he is trying to "hype up the crowd" and then introduces the band members.
Here are some comments from the band during the show:
"Any minute we'll be rocking. But first, you must endure one more Prozac-like ballad. So hold your horses."
"Alright, now we're going to play some songs there's no fucking way you can talk over."
"I'd like to do another immensely sad one. Let me tell you something. Sadness has gotten us really far."
"We will play one off our latest album, "Vitology"."
"Do you like The Frogs? They are good friends of ours, and we snort cocaine with them."
"Let me see your fucking hands up in the air. Let's see them like you just don't care. I don't care how white you are, jump!"
Billy to a heckler: "Would you like to say that to my face? Hey tough guy! Would you like to say that to my face? You're the same guy at every Lollapoloza heckling us. We give you a collective, fuck off!".
We start recording in a week. We wrote about 40 songs. Of course, half of them will be bad. We hope to have 24-30 songs. It's for sure going to be a double album, and it's only going to cost $2."
