Seretse Small has arisen as one of the most promising Jazz talents in Jamaica today. 

Specializing in the acoustic guitar his performances draws the audience in with inventive improvisations and very expressive musical “storytelling”. Seretse’s main influences have been Earl Klugh, George Benson, Van Halen and Al Di Meola. 

Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica in 1967 Seretse first drew attention at the Jamaica School of Music where he excelled as a rock Guitarist and Composer. He received a lot of work as a Musical Director and Arranger he became known as a creative composer, with a gift for telling a story with sound. His compositions were used in many plays, ads and schools who required something different but emotionally effective. Several producers also recognized Seretse’s immense artistic talent and have used him to give interesting improvisational twists to recordings. He has worked with Dean Fraser, Dwight Pinckney, Mallory Williams, Carlene Davis and Noel Browne. They have used his talents on recordings for Luciano, Carlene Davis, & Pam Hall.

 Seretse is also a music educator and he presently is the head of the music program at the EXED Community College in Kingston, Jamaica. His desire to see the state of improvisational music in the Caribbean improve has led him to form Griot Music, an organization devoted to “telling the story of the Caribbean soul”. Griot Music has established a “Jammers Network” to promote the development of improvisers by mounting monthly jams and workshops to facilitate the networking of Caribbean musicians. 

For his work as a jazz artist and as a promoter of the development of the Jamaican improvising musician, Seretse has received two JAMI awards for “ Best New Artist 1997 and for “Excellence” in 1998. His creative approach to Caribbean Jazz has won the respect of many who hail as “One of the most admired guitarists around” (Andrew Clunis Sunday Gleaner August 20). He has recently completed a recording of solo guitar performances entitled “The Silo Sessions” which was released in November 2000 and will be featured on the BET ON JAZZ series “JAZZ IN THE SUN”. Guitarist, Composer and Music educator, Seretse is definitely a musical force to reckon with.
