He notices that Pikachu likes to play with pokeballs- just not to be in them- so he gives Pikachu one to play with.
(Pikachu points toward a wild Bulbasaur) Pikachu: Pika! Pika!
Ash: What's that Pikachu? Oh! I see! You wanted to tell me that there's a wild Bulbasaur there and I should catch it!
(Pikachu nods) Pikachu: Chu.
Bulbasaur: Bulba! (Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf on Pikachu)
Ash: Pikachu, I choose you! Use Thundershock!
Pikachu: PIKA! (Pikachu uses thundershock)
Ash throws a pokeball, and...Bulbasaur is caught!
Ash: Alright! We caught Bulbasaur!
