The Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Boston Bruins in six games to capture the 2012-13 Stanley Cup, their second championship in four years

In 1892, Lord Stanley of Preston, Canada’s Governor General at the time, donated a trophy to honour the best amateur hockey team in Canada. The gold-lined silver cup was purchased for the price of 10 guineas (which was slightly less than $50).

Since there was more than one league in professional hockey when the Cup was awarded, not every team was an NHL team. If you don’t recognize some of the names, you can go to my team nickname page so that you can find out who they are and where they played.

The Stanley Cup has been won by the Montreal Canadiens a record 23 times (well, 24, if you consider their win before the NHL existed), followed distantly by the Toronto Maple Leafs, who--including wins by the St. Pats, Arenas, and Blueshirts--have hoisted 14 Stanley Cups.
