Jumping - the result of a combination of speed, timing, power, distance, flow, and finesse - is like being on a roller coaster. Momentum swiftly hoists you up and then plunges you down, before you can catch your breath. The difference is that a roller coaster doesn't produce its own power the way a skater can, using the knees to control both speed and force.
