Undefeated Canadian Kung fu Champion: 1989, 1990, 1991
Martial Arts Instructor
Motto: "Ever forward!"
Author: The Martial Artist's Way

Glen on Teaching

"I learned a great deal while teaching. Teaching is a great way to learn."

"I don't look for anything when I train someone... their best qualities come to me... they (qualities) show themselves... It's the way you teach that should be addressed... when an individual listens with 'confidence' rather than through 'intimidation', you would be amazed at what comes up to the surface."

"When teaching... an instructor has to be prepared to learn."

Glen on Martial Arts

  1. Individuality should be attained after a solid base has been established.
  2. Contemporary ideals are great... but all things stem from a classical base.
  3. You get out what you put in.
  4. No matter how good you are... you're gonna get hit.
  5. Everything is a circle - no beginning and no end.
  6. Speed beats power.

"A perfect technique is a technique that works."

"In martial arts YOU ARE FORGED IN THE SHADOW OF YOUR OWN WILL... no train... no skill."

"Kung Fu is a circle. It has no beginning and no end."

Stealing the Energy: "If I'm standing in front of somebody, there's an energy focus. To steal the energy, one strikes that area or they strike a different area, they take the energy away from where it's strong, and then you can attack where the energy is now weak."

"...if the only ideas that run through the mind [when deciding to take up a martial art] are to 'kick some butt' or to impress the 'babes' - please…go bowling."

"Your martial art ability is the echo of yourself."

Glen's Philosophy

"Learning is growth; growth is evolution."

"Be like a circle: continuous, ever-forward, improvisational."

"From within one small warrior spreads thoughts and words that will reach hundreds - these hundreds will then utter the very same words reaching thousands-and those thousands then shall cry out these very same thoughts, which will soon encompass the world! What will this small warrior say?"

"Once you believe in yourself, there is no mountain, there is only a pathway."

"Wishing: is the end result of one's avoidance of total sacrifice to reach a certain goal or objective."

"So, why shouldn't I keep reaching for the light? It's a really easy thing to do, because the light is there, you can see it, you reach for it. There shouldn't be any kind of big dilemma about it - just keep reaching for it. If somebody cuts off my arm, well then I'll reach with the other one!"

"Never walk away from yourself."

"When your number is called... it don't matter how fast you are... you gotta dock the boat and get off for the next rider."

"Whatever avenue we use to magnify life's greatness (ie. martial arts), just remember... The ACTUAL is limited, the POSSIBLE is immense."

Greg Doyle's
Quotations

Glen on his father

"When it's too tough for everyone else... it's just right for me."

"You don't have to do anything in life except die. Everything else is by choice."

"Winning or losing a fight is inevitable; the bottom line is, that you did fight."

"Believe NOTHING that you hear... and only HALF of what you see."

"Don't waste your energy trying to win people over or to change their attitudes about you... rather let them waste their energy disliking you..."

"If someone is hiding in your house... playing games and snickering through the walls... you don't waste time and effort looking for them... you just burn the house down... right to the last brick."

"If you run from him today, you're going to run from him tomorrow and you're going to run from him the rest of your life."

"Never respect anyone who doesn't respect you."

"Though it may seem selfish, and it takes more strength than you might believe, be good to yourself above any and all things. Because after the competition is over, the trophy is won, and the parade has stopped marching, all you have left is yourself… and that's the person that you must live with - today and tomorrow."

"He was a Korean War Veteran. He boxed for the Canadian Army after the war, he also ran marathons... when he was discharged he became an Iron Worker."

"The boxing principles [that Dad taught me] really molded me. They really gave me a good sense of who I was and right and wrong, good, and bad where I want to go, where I don't want to go. I knew that at a very young age."

"My most thrilling moment... When I walked off the plane from Vancouver and saw the look in both my Dad's and Sifu's eyes... the pride they felt when I handed them the trophies."

"My father gave me my fighting spirit, and my sifu gave me my fighting style."

"Whoever buys my book gets to learn a little bit about my dad. So that's like a bonus, right? I'm published, I got to honor my dad, people can learn a little bit about him, a little bit about me."

"My father was the greatest influence. His humour, and outlooks on life gave both myself and my writing character. Without his guidance and influence, I would have never written a book."

"He was my hero, and he always will be. He was an amazing man. He taught me about everything, and the person that I am, is the person he made me."

Glen on Elvis

Elvis on Glen

"Elvis' energy towards his training was, and is, unmatched by anyone else I've trained. It's his dedication that sets him apart from a lot of other martial artists."

"Loyalty [is Elvis' best quality]. He is your friend; he is your friend for life. No one can tell him differently, no one will ever convince him differently. He is a very, very loyal person and I am talking in his sport, in his personal life, in friendships, as a student."

"Elvis Likes to change up to keep things fresh... besides... he could walk on water and the judges still burn him on artistic... Don't get me started!"

"When he's in game mode... nothing can distract him."

"Elvis' heart is bigger than the rink he skates in."

"Anyone who doesn't think I support Elvis 100% is a walking lobotomy."

"Glen and I are very close. We talk about everything. We come up with ideas and throw them back and forth; that type of thing. Glen's my best friend."

"As a teacher, he allows me to be me."

"Glen always wanted me to be myself. He always encouraged me to speak my mind, and if the technique didn't feel quite right, he would change it on the spot, make it work for me."

"Glen just loves Kung-Fu. He has a drive to be excellent at it - to do his best. Plus, he has an inner drive to understand himself. He does that through the martial arts."

AOIFE
Glen's Dog

Aoife was a birthday gift from Elvis. Elvis thought that the 37 lb. Australian Cattle Dog that herds 2000 lb. cattle was similar to Glen. (i.e. winning competition after competition over the bigger guys.)

"Rank Roo Rerry Ruch Rall of Roo. I'm Reeling Ruch Retter...Ran't rait roo row racing ritty rats! Ree ya!!"

~~ Aoife Doyle ~~

No matter what I've done or how bad a day I've had, Aoife doesn't care. She's just always happy to see me.

[Paraphrasing Glen]

CYNTHIA ROTHROCK

"... Glen ... is straightforward and unpretentious, with a small amount of humor to complete the package."

"Sifu Glen Doyle is a great friend…an excellent martial arts teacher with a vast amount of knowledge…with a heart of gold … always willing to share with everyone ideas on how to improve oneself. The man has it all."

Sifu Lore on Glen

Glen on Sifu Lore

"Oh, Glen, he learns fast, and he asks questions when he doesn't know. A lot of people when you teach them, they don't ask you. But he will know why every move is made. [...] Glen is wide open. If he doesn't know it, he'll ask."

"I see Glen, I feel good; I feel happy."

"He teaches with 110%. It’s amazing. You know, you make a mistake, he’s on you right away. He won’t pull punches, he won’t sugar-coat the words, he’ll say 'you screwed up.' If you do something well, he’ll tell you, 'you did well.' So that’s more than a teacher."

"[...]he’s also a father figure. He takes you into his house, you become one of his children."

"I'd never deny Sifu Lore a thing... he deserves the world."

"If you fight, you're gonna get hit."
