DOCTORS ASK ADVERTISERS TO CURTAIL ALCOHOL ADS AIMED AT YOUNG
The American Medical Association is urging the television and cable networks to curtail alcohol advertisements aimed at adolescent viewers. A new report -- a compilation of 20 years of scientific data on how alcohol alters the developing brain -- reveals that young drinkers are at higher risk of brain damage than are adults. Evidence points to possibly irreversible damage of alcohol on the developing brain, researchers said. AMA Chair Dr. J. Edward Hill said the report dispels the myth that teenagers are more resilient to drinking than are adults. A year after the AMA convinced NBC to reverse its decision to run hard-liquor ads, the alcohol industry continues to be more aggressive in pursuing underage customers through television advertising, researchers said.

DEPRESSION NOT NORMAL PART OF AGING
Depression in the elderly, which can lead to illness and premature death, can be treated effectively with the drug Paxil CR, a study suggests. Depression in the elderly often is overlooked as patients deal with other problems and pass it off as a "normal sign of aging," researchers said. One study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found late-life depression results in an increased risk of death from suicide and illness without medical care. A second study showed the promise of Paxil CR as a safe and effective treatment for elderly patients suffering from depression. Older individuals often take a variety of medications, making it difficult to comply with their antidepressant program, especially when side effects are experienced, researchers said. Improved tolerability may help seniors remain on their medication, doctors said. Despite its prevalence, depression is under-diagnosed in the elderly, with only 10 percent of sufferers receiving treatment, said lead study investigator Dr. Mark Rapaport of the University of California, San Diego.

    ANTI-CLOT DRUG SHOWS PROMISE
Studies of an investigational oral anticoagulant called Exanta, made by AstraZeneca, show the drug can reduce the risk of blood clots after knee surgery. Exanta -- the first in a class of drugs known as Oral Direct Thrombin Inhibitors -- is expected to become the first new oral anticoagulant in 50 years, researchers said. One study, of 2301 patients, showed Exanta reduced 26 percent more blood clots after knee replacement surgery than the gold standard, warfarin. A second study showed Exanta prevented 84 percent more blood clots than did a placebo, a compound that has no therapeutic value, among patients with a history of clot formation. The studies indicate Exanta is safe and effective in long-and short-term prevention of blood clots, its makers said. Blood clots are a major cause of death in hospitalized patients. Failure to diagnose and prevent blood clots have made them the most common cause of unexpected death in this group, and patients undergoing orthopedic surgery are at a particularly high risk, researchers said.
