From Left to Right: The recently announced soundtrack coming out from Varese Sarabande. Jack Nitzsche's 'The Last Race' is on this Hot Rods CD anthology. The soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's film "Death Proof" also contains 'The Last Race.' The Beau Brummels' album contains their 2 performances from the film. A 3-disc compilation of their work has a special performance from the film in it. A vinyl 45 of Freddy Cannon's 'Little Bitty Corrine.'
It took 40 years, but finally, Village of the Giants is being released by Varese Sarabande. And by the way, did I mention that I also have Joy Harmon's giantess outfit? Yes, it's true: there is no soundtrack for this film. Many fans of this film have struggled for years to track down the songs in the film. Not all of those listed in the opening credits have made it to CD, and some probably were never found again.
One of the biggest names to come out of the music listing was Jack Nitzsche, who was known for all manner of beach-themed music, and later went on to win an Academy Award for the song 'Up where we Belong,' from the film An Officer & A Gentleman. His theme for Village of the Giants is titled 'The Last Race,' and is currently available on an anthology of music from the Hot Rod Magazine. From their CD 'Big Boss Instrumentals,' the music is sadly missing the deep bass from the dance sequence, and has (as it's a hot rod album)the sound of roadsters peeling out. When Quentin Tarantino released his feature film Death Proof in 2007, Nitzsche's 'The Last Race' resurfaced in the public's consciousness when it was used for the opening credits of his film. Much like the 'Big Boss Instrumentals' release, the deeper bass is not present, and the sound of roadsters is prevalent through the song. Of course, since Death Proof involves fast cars, it seems only natural.
The Beau Brummels two songs in the film ('Woman' & 'When it comes to Your Love') can be found on their 'Vol. 2' album. This album also contains a bonus instrumental of 'When it Comes to Your Love.' Just recently, I came across a 3-disc compilation of the Beau Brummels' music that was released in 1996. On disc #2, there is a performance of When it comes to your love, that is titled as Village of the Giants version. This is most likely the track that was performed when we first see the Beau Brummels playing at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go.
Freddy Cannon's crooning to the bikinied babes at the Hainesville fountain resulted in his singing the song 'Little Bitty Corrine.' Unfortunately, Cannon's song is not available on any albums that are available. The song was released as a 'B-side' to a single titled 'She's Somethin' Else.' The Warner Bros. record release was supposedly Freddy Cannon's last release for the year of 1965, possibly coinciding with the release of Village of the Giants.
A search for several of the other songs mentioned ('Marianne' and 'Nothing can Stand in my Way') have turned up nothing in my searches. Mike Clifford sang the song 'Marianne' in the evening by the fountain in Hainesville, yet Mr. Clifford's work is almost non-existent on the internet. According to one site, 'Marianne' was never released, and is one of the 'lost' songs of Nitzsche's work. Kind of sad, considering we never got to hear the whole song in the film.
