Production Materials from VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS.

Like many fans, we're constantly fascinated here by actual production materials from Bert I Gordon's 1965 film. This page will chronicle the items that we are able to find, dealing with the rigors of the production process of this film.

PRODUCTION CALL SHEET

When we interviewed Hank Jones recently, Hank was kind enough to provide us with several pieces of material from his collection of items. One of them was this copy of a Production Call Sheet from May 11, 1965. To actually see how the filming was achieved for this film is truly an amazing thing!
It appears that on this day, almost all the interior shots dealing with Nancy's Living Room (referred to as "Barry House") were made. If you know what to look for in the film, you may be able to figure out what shot matches up with it's identification. For example: scene 334 calls for Tommy Kirk, Charla Doherty, Tony Basil, and Johnny Crawford. This most likely was the scene where Mike decides that they need to capture their own hostage to use as leverage against the giants.
It appears also that later on, production of the basement scenes took place on other days, as only two scenes are filmed here. One mentions Robert Random and Tim Rooney, most likely the break-in to the basement where Tim's character Pete steals the goo. After this, scenes 381-382 are most likely composed of Mike's second plan to try and get the guns back, as well as free Nancy and the Sheriff's daughter, Cora.

SHOOTING SCRIPT

Not only did Hank Jones provide us with a copy of his production call sheet while working on Village of the Giants, but he also provided us with the incredible opportunity to view his copy of the script for Village of the Giants.
Before seeing Hank's script, I had previously viewed a copy of the script at the Margaret Herrick Library in Beverly Hills, CA. The library was a treasure trove of items from the history of film, but on file was a copy of the script that had been owned by Production Manager Frank Caffey. While I took copious notes during my time at the library, it was a dream to one day transcribe Alan Caillou's script for the website.
Hank has given us that opportunity, so that you may see what the final draft had in store for the citizens of Hainesville. On the main Information page, you'll find a link to view our transcribed copy of Hank's script, and see everything from re-written pages, to extra characters, scenes, and concepts that were abandoned by the wayside as the film was made.
In 2007, I compared the script to the film, and chronicled this information in the 'Comparison' area of our 'Information' page. Be sure to check there for now on the difference between the script and the final film that was released on October 20, 1965.
