A new cynical era starting with Tatu
Expressen, February 3d 2003
Column by Anders Nunstedt.
Translation: J Hansson

The era of manufactured popbads are not over yet. On the contrary - Russian Tatu has started a new era. Sorry to say, the music business seems more cynical than ever.

Made-up biographies, stars that can't sing, arranged scandals planted in the media, manufactured group constallations - no need to give examples to see that the music business can be pretty cynical.
If a manager asks the artist to throw a tv out the hotel window when the career is going down is one thing. A certain Ivan Shapovalov, manager for Russian Tatu, takes it a few steps further.
Many steps too far.

His launch of the two 17 year old girls in Tatu has been a real success. Barely one article have been written without it mentioning the girls are lesbians. Not surprising when Lena and Julia make out in their videos. The attention for the chart climbers hasn't really decreased when they talk openly about their homosexuality. Lately that subject has died down a bit.
Perhaps their boyfriends back in Moscow turned a bit grumpy.
The answer seems pretty obvious. Tatu are in Britain - today no.1 on the brittish single chart - exposed as a hoax, directed by Shapovalov.

The circus seemed stupidly harmless until Shapovalov opened his big mouth and revealed to the British press the intentions of attracting child molestors with Tatu's Lolita-image. If all the people with pedophilistic tendencies make such a great foundation to make a career on, is hard for me to believe. The strategy is extremely cynical; and if not criminal then definitely immoral.
Tatu are, of course, facing a boycott in Britain at the moment, but it would be surprising if the last word has been said. A couple of advicors are trying to make the girls and their manager to go out and explain it all as a big misunderstanding.

The disclosure as the media-inexperienced Shapovalov told the British press raise questions. Have every launch of new underaged popstars and bands, had extremely cynical ulterior motives? One thing is for sure though. You'll never stop being surprised.
Perhaps there's other Shapovalovs out there.
