Earth Day is celebrated internationally on April 22 as a result of a grassroots movement to bring attention to the state of the environment. Through the efforts of Senator Gaylord Nelson and an estimated twenty million grade school, high school, and college students and community members across the country, the first Earth Day was celebrated in the spring of 1970. This event spurred the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Clean Air Act of 1970.
