LOS ANGELES -- A 23-year-old Los Angeles man convicted of the attempted murder of a Hispanic rap group artist who was paralyzed in a January shooting in the Westlake area was sentenced today to life in prison with the possibility of parole, the District Attorney's office announced.

But Deputy District Attorney Kelly Sakir said that since Robert Gorcsi has to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence to be eligible for a parole hearing, it is unlikely that he ever will get out of prison.

Superior Court Judge Charles Horan sentenced Robert Gorcsi to 14 years to life for attempted first-degree murder, then added a 25-year-to-life sentence for personal use of a firearm causing paralysis to the victim. Gorcsi also was ordered to make $100,000 restitution to the victim. The judge added an additional five years for a prior serious felony conviction, but stayed lengthy sentences on convictions of assault with a firearm and mayhem. A six-year term for evading police was imposed, but will run concurrently with the attempted murder sentence.

Gustavo Gonzalez, 27, of Whittier, a member of the Psycho Realm rap group, was shot in the neck on Jan. 29 of this year near a Tommy's Original Hamburger stand near Rampart and Beverly boulevards shortly before 1 a.m.

Police said Gorcsi was with a group of friends in line at the hamburger stand when a fracas broke out after another man winked or smiled at one of the girls in the group. He was punched in the face. The group was asked to leave and as Gorcsi and the others walked out, Gonzalez, who had no ties to the man who was punched, asked the defendant what the confusion was about, police said.

Investigators said the defendant and the victim began to argue and Gorcsi walked to his vehicle, got a handgun and fired one or two shots at Gonzalez. Gorcsi and his friends fled, but were followed by police and the defendant was arrested when the vehicle was stopped in the El Sereno area, officers said.

Sakir said Psycho Realm is the No. 2-ranked Hispanic rap group in the nation. A new album, on which Gonzalez worked prior to his being shot, was released on Aug. 22.

Gonzalez now is paralyzed from the neck down, said the prosecutor.

Gorcsi was tried before a jury, which returned guilty verdicts on Aug. 11. He has been in custody in lieu of $1.675 million bail since his arrest on Jan. 29.
