Fateful Night

He waved to her through the car window as he left for a new start. A single tear dripped down her cheak as she managed to offer him a weak smile. She knew she'd miss him terribly. She couldn't imagine a life without her one true love.

She turned away and walked slowly to the door. Once inside, she ran into her bedroom and onto her bed. She layed there for a few minutes, crying.

After the crying came the anger. Why did he have to leave her? Was it something she did? Could she have been a better lover to him? Would he find someone else? Could SHE find someone else? And if she could, would she be willing to forget her one true love, Kris Reman?

The answer was no. She couldn't forget him, not ever. They'd done way too much together to be able to forget the other. Even if they were worlds apart. She could never forget the way she felt in his arms, the way his lips felt on hers...

It wasn't until she woke up around seven that she realized she had fallen asleep. She went to the bathroom to wash her face just as the phone rang.

Realizing that her parents were out of town, she walked over to the phone, hoping against all hope it was Kris, calling to say he was comming back.

"Ashley Carson," a husky male voice spoke as she said hello. "This is Hank, Kris's brother."

Ashley's heart began to pound. She already knew what he was going to say, but she didn't want to know. She inhaled deeply and braced herself with the help of the wall near the phone.

"Wha- What hajppened?" Ashley stammered. She really didn't want to know, but felt she had to. She looked down at her shoes. White Etnies with powder blue laces. She had just bought them yesterday, with Kris.

"There was an accident." Hank began. "Kris was going through some curves way too fast. He hit a truck. He wasn't wearing his seatbelt, and..."

Ashley could hear Hank's voice break. It was really sad. She tried to say something comforting, but seemed to have momentarily lost her voice.

"He was thrown out of the car. He's unconcious right now, but the doctors don't think he'll make it through the night. They say he would have made it if he would have been wearing his seatbelt."

Ashley let her breath out in a sob. Hank told her that he had called a cab to take her to the hospital, it being only 30 minutes away. She was bearly listining to him.

She heard a car honk out front, and hung up with Hank, then ran to the taxi and hopped in. The 30 minutes it took her to get to the hospital were the worst 30 minutes of her life.

When she finally got to Kris's room, she froze outside the door. Gathering herself, she walked slowly towards him. She could see his badly bruised face peeking through the white blankets covering his body.

She sat down on the hard plastic chair near his bed and grabbed his hand. She just sat there, looking at him for a while, then began to cry.

She placed her forehead gentally on the bed near their clasped hands. She began to sob, asking why this had to happen to Kris.

She felt warm flesh gentally move up and down her cheek. Ghasping, she jerked her head up to see her lover's beautiful brown eyes staring at her with more pain than she ever thought possible.

"Kris," Ashley mannaged to get out. He pulled her towards him, and kissed her with more passion than she'd ever felt before. Then, he pushed her back, and closed his eyes.

He managed to give her hand one last squeeze before he died.
