Dictionary of Japanese Terms

Ok, I put this thing together 'cause, well, it gets confusing to read a story when you can understand all the terms used, right? I organized it by story, and got as many of the Japanese words as I could. If I missed any, just let me know by e-mailing me at normalqq@yahoo.com. I'll also update it as I write more stories and all that. By the by, I'm far from fluent in Japanese, English being my native and only fluent language. That would explain why some of the translations may be a little off. All I have to work with is a lil' Japanese Dictionary and my school books from college. Hope this helps out a lil'.

When Realities Meet

Sai - three pronged, hand held weapon. Used traditionally against swords, sometimes called “Sword breakers”

Hai - yes

Katana - Japanese fighting sword. Slightly curved,  bladed along one edge.

Nunchucks or nunchucku - hand held weapon; two wooden or metal sticks bound together by chain. Used to pummle and capture adversary’s weapon.

Shimatta - damn

Bo - staff

Sensei - teacher

Koibito - sweetheart

Hai - yes

Iie - no

-chan - suffix denotting familiarity towaards a female or with a girl. Can also be insulting.

Kawaii - cute

-sama - suffix denoting royalty or extreme respect

Senshi – warrior

-san – suffix denoting respect to a stranger or someone you don’t know well, like Mr, Ms or Mrs

Domo arigato – informal thanks

Hentai – pervert or perverted

Youma – demon or monster

Aikido – “Way of Harmony” Martial art that uses attacker’s force against them; completely defensive.

Ja ne – see you later

Shiruken – bladed throwing stars

Dojo – learning or training hall

-kun – suffix denoting familiarity with a male, or used with a boy. Can be used as an insult.

Kimono – traditional Japanese clothing

Itai – ouch

Kata – series of movements memorized to hone one’s skill and technique in the martial arts.

Minna – everyone
