Part II- The
Womanifesto
by Christine
One century
ago, our founding mothers set forth to achieve equality for women. No longer
would we be denied the right to vote. No longer would we follow meekly
in the shadows of our husbands, brothers or fathers. No longer would we
sit quietly and be stepped upon. A battle cry rose from the depths of every
womb in every woman across the country. Throwing down their aprons, they
left the kitchen clamoring for equality and suffrage. And for the most
part, they have succeeded, providing hope and inspiration for generations
of women to come.
It
is with this idea in mind that I write to you today. I will not hold your
hand docilely as you proudly display me to your friends, nor will I pretend
that the words that spew forth from your lips are at all enthralling (or
even coherent). I will deny you any opportunities to do such things. I
will deny you of the right to call me your girlfriend, for I have many
more important things to do than to waste my time with you. I will deny
your friendship, for you would only manipulate me for your own purposes.
I will deny you any opportunity to get to know me, for your presence in
my life is simply parasitic.
I have
a dream that the women of our fine country will join together in rejecting
the unworthy men who have the nerve to pursue them.
I
have a dream that the excuse of “washing my hair” will someday actually
be more important than dating the Neanderthals that surround us daily.
I have a
dream that my future daughters will live in a world where they have no
need for a boyfriend or any man at all in their lives.
I have a
dream today.
I have a
dream that there will be a day when all women, regardless of age or occupation
will unite together and reject the male gender collectively. And on that
joyous occasion when we are finally free of their pathetic desire to date
us, we will join hands and finally know the true meaning of that old spiritual.
We will proudly sing, “Free at last! free at last! thank God almighty,
we are free at last!”
