The Battle of Midway, which took place on June 3, 1942, was the turning point in the entire war. The Japanese had planned to lure American forces away from the site and then invade the island of Midway, to help gain control over Hawaii, which was about fifteen hundred miles away. However, what the Japanese didn’t know was that several days previous to the attack, US troops intercepted and cracked the Japanese code between two carriers. This allowed the US to prepare for the attack. When the time came, the Japanese fleet attacked, and found much to their surprise two American task forces along with three aircraft carriers prepared for battle. The Japanese suffered heavy casualties, losing nearly 2000 men and 250 planes, plus all four Japanese aircraft carriers sent to conquer Midway. The US also suffered minor casualties, compared to the Japanese. Around 150 planes were destroyed and about 300 men killed. This forced the Japanese out of the Pacific and dashed their hopes for taking the Pacific over.
