Nazi - Soviet Pact: August 23, 1939
August 23, 1939:
A promise, signed by Hitler and Stalin, that Germany and the Soviet Union will not to go to war with each other, and secretly agreed to divide Poland between them. The pact was signed when the Nazi prepared to invade Poland. Though Hitler hated communism and Stalin had not love for Nazism, the pact was signed as both countries gain something out of the pact. With the pact signed, the Soviet will not prevent Hitlerˇ¦s can attack Western Europe; thus enabling Hitler not to have to worry about fighting a war on two ends as Germany had to do during WWI. Stalin signed the pact because he likes the idea of wars between his enemies, while he builds up his own forces in relative peace. Hitler signed the pact knowing that it will not be long last, he just needs Soviet out of the way for awhile. Stalin, probably also suspected that the pact was temporary, and that Hitler will stop at nothing less than total control over Europe.
