Evacuation of Dunkirk: May, 1940

May 26 ˇV June 3, 1949: The evacuation of Dunkirk is also called the ˇ§Miracle of Dunkirkˇ¨. At Dunkirk, a French coastal town, a large group of British soldiers who were forced to retreat were trapped. Here, Hitler might have ended the war, but being his first big mistake, Hitler decided to call off the ground troops and wanted the air force to finish the job. As heavy fog rolled in and forced the German air force to stay on the ground, the Allied forces worked to form a rescue mission. A call went out for boats to help rescue the British troops at Dunkirk. Close to 900 boats of all sizes showed up. They joined the have British destroyers across the English Channel to help the British troops. An initial estimate was that 10, 000 soldiers may be rescued. However, the rescue turned out better than anyone could have dared to hope. By the time it ended, 340, 000 soldiers had been rescued from a certain doom.
