Dieppe: August, 1942

August, 1942: 5000 Canadian troops along with another thousand British commandos and American Rangers were chosen to storm the French port of Dieppe. The raid was meant to allow the strategists to see what it would take for a full-scale Allied invasion across the English Channel and also to draw German forces away from the Russian front. As the soldiers charged down the ramps of the landing craft and up the beach, German troopˇ¦s shells rained down from the high cliffs. A minute amount of soldiers made it to Dieppe. Of the 5000 Canadians who participated in the raid, almost 1000 died, 500 were injured and almost 2000 were captured and became POWs. The raid on Dieppe was called ˇ§another Passchendaele,ˇ¨ another battle in history that cost too many lives without any meaning.
