D-Day: June 6, 1944

June 6, 1944: Dawn of June 6, 1944, the largest invasion in history began. Allied forces massed up their attacks and stormed Normandy, France. The invasion force included 171 air squadrons to take out the German Luftwaffe and enemy tanks and more than 7000 Allied ships of all sorts. More than 30, 000 Canadians participated in the invasion. As anything in war, the invasion did not go as planned. The Germans put up a good fight and many divisions were delayed for reasons of sorts. However, the operation was still considered a success. With the Allied forces split into three sections, each charging from a different side, 155, 000 soldiers, 6000 vehicles, and 3600 tonnes of supplies had landed in France. The Allied forces began moving inland. The Canadian division got within 5 km of Caen, they were farther inland than any of the other Allied troops. Though the losses of Canadians soldiers were lower than expected, there were still close to a thousand killed, wounded or captured. Germany was now force to fight the war on three fronts, the Soviet Union, Italy and Fance.
