Imagine your self walking in the dark through a maze. You’ll stumble, hit walls, fall and surely bleed. Exhausted you are, desperate you are, but you stand up and try again and again till you finally realize that you won’t be able to find your way unless you know why you are here at the first place? Who brought you here? If there will be light to guide you through the darkness?
Since the dawn of time human kind has been in this dilemma, desperately trying to reach the truth behind their existence. Most of them reached the point that there must be an entity behind their existence (GOD or even GODS). People worshiped many Gods (sun, fire, thunder, cows …) and they had reasons that justified their believes.
If you are not an atheist then you surely follow some religion and believe in GOD. So what are the basics on which you’ve built your own believes? How can you be sure that Mohamed is a prophet? How can you be sure that the Quran is God’s words? Will you say I was born like this? This is what most people who worship fire, sun and cows say!! Surely you must have some solid ground behind your believes; something that will stand against other people claims without any reason of doubt, and bare in mind that it’s stated in the Quran that one should search and if he finds a better religion he should follow it.
So how can one reach that solid ground in an era that is dominated by science and technology?
Scientific miracles of the Quran are the best logical approach to believe in Islam thus one can reach a solid ground after which one can blindly believe in other spiritual aspects in Islam.
God promised to show us signs that will aid us in our search for the truth.

“Soon will We show them Our Signs in the furthest regions of the earth, and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things” (Quran Fussilat: 53).

That’s why it’s our responsibility to seek and search for those signs. This research is a mean to clarify, elaborate and summarize some of the scientific miracles discovered in the Holy Quran related to the universe, human creation and animal kingdom.

Atmosphere

“And We made the sky a well protected roof. Still they turn away from its signs” (Quran, Al- Anbiaa: 32).
When looking at the surface of the moon, one could easily notice that it’s wrecked and loaded with crates and holes caused by the million meteors that had crashed on it; this phenomenon is known as meteor showers (Well Protected Roof, 2007, Para. 1). Why didn’t this happen to the earth, although it’s very close to the moon only 385,000 km separating them? To grasp the idea that this distance is indeed minute when talking about the universe, light takes approximately 1.2 seconds to travel between the moon and the earth while it will take it 100,000 years to travel through the length of our galaxy The Milky Way. It’s said that it’ll take billions of years to travel through the universe in the speed of light (Krystek L., 1996).

Our atmosphere which is invisible to the eye is a gaseous envelope of 10,000 km enveloping the earth and consists of 7 layers: Troposphere, Ozonosphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Ionosphere and Exosphere. We should be grateful to the Mesosphere where most of the meteors and rock fragments burn and turn to dust.

Although Mesosphere is essential for life on earth, Ionosphere is extremely important too. It absorbs most of the harmful rays emitted from the Sun such as x-ray, increased ultraviolet rays and gamma rays. Ionization occurs in this layer in which molecules are broken apart into floating electrons and molecules which have gained or lost electrons. Amazingly, when the Sun gets more active (i.e. more harmful rays), the Ionosphere gets thicker!!
On the other hand, some types of ultraviolet light from the sun tend to pass through the Ionosphere, only Ozone and Oxygen molecules in the Stratosphere absorbs the most energetic ultraviolet radiation ( UV-C and UV-B) which causes skin cancer , tissue damage to eyes and plant tissue damage. “The protective role of the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere is so vital that scientists believe life on land probably would not have evolved – and could not exist today – without it”(Russell, 2005, Para. 12).

As shocking as it might sound, temperature in space is -270 degrees Celsius which is definitely inadequate for any kind of life resembling to the one on earth. The Troposphere which is the first layer in the atmosphere manages to trap the energy coming from the sun towards earth from going back to space. Also, it distributes evenly the heat on earth by meteorological phenomena.

To sum it all up, “Earth's atmosphere has 7 layers. The lowest layer is called troposphere. Rain, snow and wind only take place in the troposphere. There is an upper atmosphere. There is a lower atmosphere” (Cislunar Aerospace Inc. (CAI), 1995). CAI is a firm founded in California on January 25, 1995 and it’s dedicated to excellence in science, mathematical modeling, engineering education and research.

Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: "Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly." They said: "We do come (together), in willing obedience.".So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, Full of Knowledge. (Quran, Fussilat: 11-12)

Supernova, Iron & Pulsars

To be able to understand the following scientific miracles some terminologies must be clarified first.

Supernova: It’s an explosion resulting from the death of a massive star that had consumed all its fuel (Core Collapse supernova), or due to the explosion of a White Dwarf. The explosion of both types can outshine an entire galaxy for weeks (The Supernova, 2005).

White Dwarf: It is a star which began its life with mass less than 8 times of the sun, and it consumed all its fuel till its core collapsed to reach a mass less than 1.4 times of the sun (The Supernova, 2005).

White Dwarf Thermonuclear explosion: Since the white dwarf is very dense, it possesses an immensely powerful gravitational force that enables it to draw matter from nearby stars. After a while, it draws enough matter to raise its mass above 1.4 times of the sun, a mass called Chandrasekhar Mass. An uncontrolled nuclear reaction is then initiated resulting in a thermonuclear explosion that leaves nothing behind (The Supernova, 2005).

Core Collapse Supernova: When a massive star of mass at least 8 times larger than the sun exhausts all its fuel, a fusion process takes place inside its core in which oxygen and carbon are fused into heavier elements such as neon, magnesium, and silicon. Energy is liberated with each element produced to keep the star shining and to continue the process of fusing the produced element into heavier and stable elements. This process keeps taking place until iron is produced. At this point a problem occurs because the star can’t release enough energy to fuse iron. Instead it uses energy. In less than one second the core of the star collapses causing the supernova explosion dispersing the elements it has created into space (The Supernova, 2005).

Depending on the mass of the collapsed core that is left behind after the Core Collapse Supernova, scientists can determine if the collapsed core is a Neutron star, pulsar or black hole.
Black Hole: It is one of the possible ends for a star when the left behind core is more massive than about 2.5 times that of the sun.
In that case, the gravitational collapse is so great that a “runaway”
collapse occurs. The resulting “object” is certainly the most awesome
known: the black hole. This is an object whose gravitational pull
inside a certain radius called the “event horizon” is so enormous that
nothing can escape it; not even light. The laws of physics as we know
them are literally stretched to a breaking point as space and time are
“infinitely” curved, warped and distorted. (The Supernova, 2005)

Neutron Star: It is one of the possible ends for a star when the left behind core is of mass less than 2.5 times of the sun. Neutron stars are about 20km in diameter, and very dense. This means that if we took a teaspoonful of a neutron star, it would weigh a billion tons on earth. They also have a surface gravitational field of 2 x 1011 times than on earth, and they can have magnetic fields a million times stronger than the strongest magnetic fields produced on earth (Neutron stars and Pulsars, 2007).
Pulsar: Is a rotating neutron star. The frequency by which pulsars rotate around their axis can vary from 1 revolution per second up to few hundreds revolutions per second. Pulsars pulse with each revolution and this is due to the misalignment between their spin axis and magnetic axis (Neutron stars and pulsars, 2007). The fastest known pulsar is PSR J1748-2446ad, which rotates at 716 times per second (The Sounds of Pulsars, 2001).

All the previous discoveries were only discovered in the past century. For instance the first pulsar was discovered in late 1967 by graduate student Jocelyn Bell Burnell (Neutron Starts and Pulsars, 2007). So let us see how today’s science justifies the Quran.
“When the sky is torn apart, so it was (like) a red rose, like ointment” (Quran, Ar Rahman : 37)
On April 24, 1990 NASA launched Hubble Telescope from space shuttle Discovery (STS-32). “Hubble transmits about 120 gigabytes of science data every week. That's equal to about 3,600 feet (1,097 meters) of books on a shelf. The rapidly growing collection of pictures and data is stored on magneto-optical disks.” (Hubble site, 2007).

The images show the supernova explosion for some stars at the end of their life cycle; it’s very clear that the shape of the explosion resembles a flower (rose).
From approximately 1400 years it was impossible for any human to know this scientific fact at the time of the revelation of the Quran.

And We sent down iron in which there lies great force and which has many uses for man kind” (Quran, Al Hadid : 25).

When this verse was first interpreted, the word “sent down” was thought to be a metaphor that explains that iron was given to the service of the human race. Recently scientists discovered that iron is the last stable element forged inside the core of massive stars just before they explode in what is known as Supernova; The explosion disperses meteors that contain the iron in space; they keep traveling aimlessly through the void until they are pulled by the gravitational force of a celestial body (The Hidden Lives, 2001). Scientists also discovered that our solar system doesn’t have the suitable structure to produce iron on its own and that iron couldn’t have been formed on earth; therefore iron was literally “sent down” to earth by meteors from a dead star outside our solar system.
This scientific fact would have been impossible to reach without today’s technology, but it was stated in the Quran 1400 years ago (Miracle of iron, 2005).

“[I swear] by Heaven and the Tariq! And what will convey to you what the Tariq is? The Star Piercing [the darkness]!” (Quran, Al Tariq: 1-3).

The word “Tariq” stems from the root “TaRaQa” meaning “knocking,
striking.” In many translations of the Quran this word was taken for a
name and left untranslated. The word may also mean “to pulsate” like
a beating  heart, from which the word “pulsar” is derived, denoting an
object that is far away in space, and like a star produces a regular radio
signal. (Quran Miracles pulsars, 2007, Para. 2)

Pulsars gained their name because of the pulse sound they omit periodically like door knocking or heart beats. To listen to the sounds of various pulsars from slow ones to the millisecond ones visit the Jodrell Bank Observatory web site: http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/~pulsar/Education/Sounds/sounds.html

In the second verse GOD is asking if one could comprehend what a pulsar is. Pulsars, as we should know by now, are very dense stars with mass less than 2.5 times of the sun; have diameter of 20 km; one teaspoonful of them on earth would weigh billion tons and would penetrate the earth’s crust till its core; they have magnetic fields million times stronger than the strongest magnetic fields on earth; they have gravitational field of 2 x 1011 times than on earth; they pulse periodically when they rotate around their axis and they are the brightest and fastest known moving bodies in the universe!!
After all this, can you comprehend what a pulsar is?

Finally, in the third verse, it’s mentioned that this star is a piercing star.
Till now there have been two interpretations for this:
1- Pulsars emit intense radiations that can pierce and penetrate anything.
2- Pulsars are very dense and have immensely huge mass that a teaspoonful
of them would simply pierce and penetrates the earth till the core.

Once again, the Quran is justified by today’s scientific discoveries.

Let us imagine that we could take H.G Wells’ Time Machine, and travel back 1400 years through time. Surely we will be shocked at first, but after a while we will regain our strength to start exploring around. At first, it would be hard to talk to anyone because our figure and language would surely scare some and laugh others till death. Finally, our luck will make us stumble into that wise person or shall I say the craziest one who agreed to talk to us. After the usual introductory stuff from our part and the usual head nodding from his part, we would ask him what do you know about how to conceive a baby? If he didn’t laugh, he would surely answer us while raising his eye brow and saying “to conceive a baby a man and a woman must find a place to get together, a warm cozy tent is preferred, and have intercourse “sex”, excuse my French”. After recognizing the disappointment on our face, he would add “Wait! I’ve heard about that man who goes by the name of Mohamed. People say that he is a prophet and has a book called Quran that is said to be sent to him by God, and contains the answers to many things. Try and find a means to get this book; maybe you’ll find in it what you are looking for.”  We thank him for his help, and go on our way to locate that mysterious book. Not so long after, we managed to get a hold of it, and started reading it. Our aim is to find the verses that speak about the human creation, feed this data to our state of the art computer that is found in our Time Machine, to see if it’s true or not compared to what our science and technology has revealed in this century with the aid of our state of the art microscopes and sonar equipments.

The computer search yielded the following results in which each scientific fact is followed by the matching verse(s) from the Quran.

SCIENTIFIC FACT 1

It’s known that during intercourse the male ejects semen into the female uterus. Man’s semen contains approximately 250 million sperm. Only few thousands manage to survive and reach the ovum, but only one sperm is allowed to enter and fertile the ovum (A Drop of Semen, 2005).

Matching Verse(s):

“Does man reckon he will be left uncontrolled [without purpose]? Was he not once a drop of ejected semen?” (Qur'an,ALQeyama:36-37).

“He has created both sexes, male and female from a drop of semen which has been ejected.” (Qur'an, Al Nagm :45-46).

“We created man from a mingled drop to test him, and We made him hearing and seeing.” (Qur'an, AL Ensan: 2).

SCIENTIFIC FACT 2

The structure of the human being is determined by 46 chromosomes; only 2 of them are responsible for identifying the sex of the new born baby. In males these 2 chromosomes are called “XY”, but in females they are called “XX”. The code for masculinity is carried in the Y chromosome, while the X chromosome carries the code for femininity. Both chromosomes are named after their shapes because they resemble these letters. These chromosomes are found in pairs in males and females. The males’ sex cell can produce two different types of sperms, one contains X chromosomes, while the other contains Y chromosomes. On the other hand, the females’ sex cell contains only X chromosomes. If an X chromosome from the female unites with a sperm that contains an X chromosome, then the baby is female. If it unites with the sperm that contains a Y chromosome, the baby is male. To sum it all up, male’s sperm cell is responsible for determining the sex of the baby, and the female has no role in this process (The Sex of The Baby, 2005).

“Does man reckon he will be left uncontrolled [without purpose]? Was he not once a drop of ejected semen? Then did he become a leech-like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion. And of him He made two sexes, male and female. Has not He, (the same), the power to give life to the dead?” (Qur'an, ALQeyama : 36-40).

“He has created both sexes, male and female from a drop of semen which has been ejected.”(Qur'an, Al Najm :45-46).

SCIENTIFIC FACT 3

In biology, the zygote is the single cell that is formed when the male’s sperm unites with the female’s ovum. Instantly, this zygote will start multiplying (reproducing) by dividing to form a piece of flesh that is called an embryo that can only be seen by the help of a microscope. Of course, the embryo won’t continue its developmental period by moving aimlessly in the uterus. Instead, it holds on tightly (clings) to the uterus with something like roots that are firmly fixed to the earth by their tendrils. Now the embryo can start nourishing by obtaining the essential substance for its development from the mother’s blood through this bond (The clot clinging, 2005).

The meaning of the word "alaq" in Arabic is "a thing that clings to some place." The word is literally used to describe leeches that cling to a body to suck blood. This word has to be clarified to understand the following verses (The clot clinging, 2005).

Matching Verse(s):
“Recite: In the name of your Lord Who created man from alaq. Recite: And your Lord is the Most Generous.” (Qur'an, AL Alaq :1-3).

“Does man reckon he will be left uncontrolled [without purpose]? Was he not once a drop of ejected semen? Then did he become a leech-like clot; then did (Allah) make and fashion (him) in due proportion. And of him He made two sexes, male and female. Has not He, (the same), the power to give life to the dead? ”
(Qur'an, ALQeyama : 36-40)

SCIENTIFIC FACT 4

The science branch that is devoted for the study of the developmental phases of the embryo in the mother’s womb is called Embryology. Until recently, embryologists thought that the bones and muscles in an embryo develop at the same time. This was the dominant idea until the observations at the microscopic level revealed that the embryo develops in the mother’s womb in the following manner:-

  1. The cartilage tissue of the embryo ossifies.
  2. Muscular cells that are selected from amongst the tissue around the bones come together and wrap around the bones.

According to a scientific publication entitled Developing Human,
The shape of the skeleton determines the general appearance of the embryo in the bones stage during the 7th week; muscles do not develop at the same time but their development follows soon after. The muscles take their positions around the bones throughout the body and therefore clothe the bones. Thus, the muscles take their well known forms and structures… The stage of clothing with muscle occurs during the 8th week. (as cited in The wrapping of muscles, 2005)

Matching Verse(s):
[We] then formed the drop into a clot and formed the clot into a lump and formed the lump into bones and clothed the bones in flesh; and then brought him into being as another creature. Blessed be Allah, the Best of Creators!” (Qur'an, AL-MUMENOON :14).

Finally, in the Qur'an, it is related that man is created through a three-stage process in the mother's womb.
“He creates you stage by stage in your mothers' wombs in threefold darkness. That is Allah, your Lord. Sovereignty is His. There is no god but Him. So what has made you deviate? ” (Qur'an, AZ- Zumar :6).
The expression "fee thulumatin thalathin," translated into English as "a threefold darkness," indicates three dark regions involved during the development of the embryo. These are:

Amazingly, advanced science has discovered that each of them consists also of three layers.

Modern biology found that the embryo develops in three different places in the mother’s womb; this is something taken for granted in today’s embryology textbooks as an element of basic knowledge. As quoted from Three Stages of the Baby in the Womb (2005),
Basic Human Embryology, a fundamental reference text in the field of embryology, this fact is stated as follows:
The life in the uterus has three stages: pre-embryonic; first two and a half weeks, embryonic; until the end of the eight week, and fetal; from the eight week to labor.
These phases refer to the different developmental stages of a baby. In brief, the main characteristics of these developmental stages are as follows:
- Pre-embryonic Stage
In this first phase, the zygote grows by division, and when it becomes a cell cluster, it buries itself in the wall of the uterus. While they continue growing, the cells organize themselves in three layers.
- Embryonic Stage
The second phase lasts for five and a half weeks, during which the baby is referred to as an "embryo." During this stage, the basic organs and systems of the body start to appear from the cell layers.

- Fetal Stage
From this stage onward, the embryo is called a "fetus." This phase begins at the eighth week of gestation, and lasts until the moment of birth. The distinctive characteristic of this stage is that the fetus looks much like a human being, with its face, hands and feet. Although it is only 3 cm long initially, all of its organs have become apparent. This phase lasts for about 30 weeks, and development continues until the week of delivery.

At some point, each sane human being stops to question his own existence. Some would believe that there must be a God/ Gods, and some would say that there is no such thing as God. Atheists are just normal people who failed to find an answer to the question, and chose the shortest way. One shouldn’t expel them from his surrounding because he just can’t understand them; instead, one should pity them, and try to help them to find an answer without forcing any on them. On the other hand, people who believe in God reach this point through different means of thinking, and when asked how they reached this point they tend to give various answers:

  1. I was brought up like this; therefore, this must be the right path.
  2. I feel safe and peace from within, so why would I consider changing?
  3. I’ve searched in other religions faults, and found that mine is the best.

The first two answers reflect that people are afraid to search in other religions for several reasons:

  1. They might encounter some questions that they won’t be able to answer because their lack of experience in their own religion, and this might make them doubt their own religion.
  2. They might find that another religion is better, and subconsciously they know that they are too weak to confront their family and society; as a result, they react in the most common self defense mechanism “Denial”
  3. Simply they could be the recessive type personality, and only dominant type personality will consider facing such huge change in life with its accompanying consequences.

Unfortunately, one can’t follow these people because they provide no logical reason for their own believes, and if they were wrong and one did follow them, then we would be nothing more than a bunch of dead fools at the end. Instead, one should search intensively to find a solid ground to build on it his own believes.
For the third type of people, the fault that they fall in when investigating other religions or debating between each other is that they concentrate mainly on the faults of the other religions and take their religion for granted. This problem arises because each of the debating parties aim to degrade each others believes and concepts to reach the solid ground on which they would build on their own believes. This isn’t true because if one is able to prove that the other religion is wrong, that doesn’t mean that his own must be the right one. Instead, each one should concentrate on the positive points in his religion, and mention why he thinks that it’s the right one to embrace; then leave it to the other party to choose.
To sum up these types of people, let us return to our introduction’s dark maze example. People will react differently when they see the first glimpse of light:

  1. Some would prefer to stay in the darkness because they’ve adapted to living in it.
  2. Some would be afraid to go and check the source of the light because they fear the unknown.
  3. Some would have the courage to go and check the light but will fall in the middle because the journey was hard and long, and they’ll return back to the dark room. The problem is that some of them would say that there is no light to cover their failure while others are brave to admit that they just couldn’t go on.
  4. Some would reach the light but fail to convince others to follow them. They know that the light is true but they don’t have the tools to convince the others to follow them.
  5. Finally, some would reach the light and come back with the adequate tools required to convince the others to follow them.

Back to our research, since this era is dominated by science and technology; then the right tools to convince others should be of the same kind. That’s why after presenting the previous scientific facts discovered during the 20th century and miraculously stated in the Quran in the 7th century, I could safely say that who ever wrote it can’t be a human by all means. It’s something much more advanced, sophisticated, intelligent and wiser. You could call it a supreme entity that entity; that defied anyone to out knowledge it through out the universe, and also that said in the Quran that one should search and if he manages to find a better religion he should follow it. For me, since I can’t find a better or even a matching one, I could safely say that THIS IS MY GOD. My GOD who created the universe (space, stars, planets, atmosphere, water, earth, human beings …..).
Although the facts are sufficient, one must stop searching only when dead because by time one would find facts that would make him embrace Islam much more or find that better religion; so as to be able to say that “I lived my life searching for the truth, and not like a sheep in the herd. That is why I now can rest in peace.”
Finally, I leave you with some of my GOD’s words to the human kind, and hope that you would be able to understand the reason why I arranged them in such a manner.
“And those to whom knowledge has come see that the (Revelation) sent down to thee  from thy Lord - that is the Truth, and that it guides to the Path of the Exalted (in might), Worthy of all praise.” (Quran, SABA: 6).
“Say: "I tell you not that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor do I know what is hidden, nor do I tell you I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me." Say: "can the blind be held equal to the seeing?" Will ye then consider not?” (Quran, AL-ANAAM: 50).
"But whosoever turns away from My Message, verily for him is a life narroweddown, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment."He will say: "O my Lord! why hast Thou raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)?" (Allah) will say: "Thus didst Thou, when Our Signs came unto thee, disregard them: so wilt thou, this day, be disregarded."  (Quran, TAHA: 124~126).

“Blessed is He who sent down the criterion to His servant, that it may be an admonition to all creatures.” (Quran, AL-FURQAN: 1).
“He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth: no son has He begotten, nor has He a partner in His dominion: it is He who created all things, and ordered them in due proportions.” (Quran, AL-FURQAN: 2).
