- Tokelau closer to self-determination

Tokelau is three small atolls in the Pacific Ocean. The area is approx. 10 sq km and consists of 1,418 inhabitants.

A new agreement has been signed outlining future relations between New Zealand and Tokelau. Since 1925, New Zealand has been the administering power for the Polynesian atolls of Tokelau. The new Principles of Partnership were signed recently by New Zealand's Associate Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Taito Philip Field, and the Ulu o Tokelau Kolouei O'Brien

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Phil Goff says it is a step closer to decolonisation for the tiny atolls.

He says because the islands of Tokelau are so small, continued assistance is needed from New Zealand to work through the decolonisation process.

Mr Goff says the final decision about their future is up to the people of Tokelau.

The process is expected to take many years as, in the past, Tokelauans have been reluctant to change the status quo, which provides them with New Zealand citizenship and aid.
